Rear Bumper Protector

Came across a very pleasant firm called RG Mouldings based in Leighton Buzzard last week, who along with other things, market Rearguards, which are bespoke trim plates to cover the tops and upper rear bumper painted surfaces to protect the finish when loading and unloading into the boot. They have just recently developed one for the Macan.

Our German Shepherd dog, Jake just loves the Macan and we invested in Porsche's high-sided boot tray so he can come along with us, but he's still liable to scratch the bumper top when getting in or out and this Rearguard should resolve the problem admirably.
They are scratch-resistant moulded ABS plastic units designed specifically for each model, available in black, silver, brushed alloy or carbon look - they do a pressed alloy ribbed unit too. The guards are fixed using 3M adhesive tape, so no damage to the original bumper and can easily be removed too.

My telephone enquiry was dealt with promptly and efficiently and they sent me out a swatch card to help me choose the correct finish. Prices range from around £55 to £70 +P&P - lot less than a paint job.

We eventually settled for the brushed alloy version and I now await delivery. I'll post up another pic when fitted.

As I've now finished with the swatch card, if anyone else would like it, I'd be happy to post it on.

The bumper protector arrived just a few days after ordering it, but I've only just got around to fitting it. It's a fairly straight forward procedure and, as promised I'll show you how I did it. The kit comes well packaged with the unit, copious instructions and a spirit wipe. There is double sided 3M's tape already fixed on the back to bond the protector to the bumper.

The first thing to do was offer it up dry. I then used some masking tape on both sides to mark the correct position. By carefully slicing the tapes each side, I now have alignment guides on protector and bumper to assist alignment with the final fitment.

Next you need to degrease the bumper surface. I used an industrial cleaner aerosol and finally the supplied spirit-wipe to finish off. It's important you only wipe it one way left to right or vice versa, but not both ways.

The worst part of the job is stripping the backing off the 3M's tape. I used the blade of a Stanley knife to roll back a corner so I could grab hold of it.

The instructions say the ambient temperature should be between 18 and 20 degrees C before fitting , but I couldn't wait until July for it to warm up, so I used a hot air gun, taking care not to overdo it and blister the paint surface.

Once the bumper was warm to touch, I lined up the masking tapes on bumper and unit on both sides and pressed it home. Hey presto - It fits nice and snugly over the contours of bumper and the brushed alloy finish blends in very well with Rhodium Silver colour of the car.

Been using this for 18 months now and there's no doubt it's saved the vehicle from damage and copious scratches to the rear bumper.

The guard is resilient and looks as good now as the day it was fitted.

Definitely an asset and certainly recommended. []

Ours is coming up for 2 years old now and is still as good as new, notwithstanding the 4 legged member of our family having thoroughly tested its durability. []
