hard lock noise

Hi Folks,

Just had need steering rack fitted and there is now a hell of a noise/clunking on hard lock especially to the right-any one encountered this before i return car to porsche aberdeen for a looksee ?

Distant diagnosis is difficult, but could it be one tyre fouling on something? This can happen if a wheel arch liner or something has not been fixed back. Otherwise, it's possible the track rods have not been equalised causing greater lock on one side or there's a faulty knuckle joint or track rod end. It needs reviewing on a ramp. Seems strange your PC should send it out like this. Regards, Clive.

That's what I thought Clive-thanks for comments-at least I might sound like i know what i'm talking about-lol Cheers

Clunking noise on full lock could be CV joint. If they have been removed in the process of fitting new rack. Although I cant see that you would need to remove the CV joints.Maybe the new rack is giving you a bit more lock than the old one and that could force the CV joints into a position they haven't been in for a while and that would give you your noise.

Had you tried the car on full lock before the rack replacement Keith? Or did you just try it because it had been replaced?[:)] It could simply be the tyres, Ackermann angle and all that stuff. They often scrub on full lock going forward or back.

Is it rhythmical or intermittent? Would have thought if it was tyre on bodywork/liner it would be constant and not clunky. There are many, many threads on various forums about "clunking" on full lock. Tyres are a common culprit but as you have just had major surgery on the steering it seems, on balance, more likely they cocked up the fitting!

I have a 991.1 C2S and have also developed a clunk, clunk clunk type noise and notchy feeling on full lock in either direction. Only bought the car a few months ago and have a Porsche warranty, so I'll contact them and see what they think. Dreading it really as service response seems 3rd world country slow in Hatfield. Any thoughts?

From what I've read that could be the Ackerman effect from the steering geometry, seems to get worse as the weather gets colder.

Common quirk of the car - but a bit disconcerting if you're not used to it.

Less elasticity in summer tyre compounds exaggerating the hopping feel as the tyres scrub on full lock.

My 4S is particularly bad in reverse on full lock.

I have also read that Pirelli tyres are the worst culprit for this ( luckily I have these fitted ! )

My first thought with mine was knackered top mounts, but it appears that it is a "normal" for these cars !!

Hope yours turns out to be nothing major.

Thanks mate. I've read so many posts on this, I'm pretty convinced that it is fine. But will get Hatfield to have a look at it anyway and post anything interesting. Looking forward to Bicester on Sunday

Did they purge the air out of the hydraulic lines ? A few turns from lock to lock is the method with the engine at idle. Check the fluid level first.
