944 DME Project Dyno Time

I have been working on my 944 DME project on the dyno for the past couple of weeks. The aim has been to see what kind of torque curve can be extracted from a 944 2.5 8v NA engine. The result so far, not done yet, has been a peak of 172ftlb of torque and 174bhp from a completely standard engine. The best part for me has been working the torque curve in both directions. Getting good torque low down and extending the torque curve up into the rev range. The top end of the 944 always felt weak to me and it never felt like is was worth revving the car that hard. That is no longer the case :D.

With no modifications to the engine the following torque curve is available. With torque exceeding 150ftlb from 3000 through to 6000 rpm and a peak power of 174 bhp. Normally with a 944 the torque really drops of after 5500 rpm which keeps the peak power down. I have been able to keep the torque high which gives a power figure of 175 bhp. This is not the end of what this engine is capable of. Torque wise the peak achieved so far has been over 170 ftlb. I will be working over the coming weeks to keep this torque higher in the rev range hopefully exceeding 180bhp from a stock engine with an AFM delete pipe and standard exhaust. This represents a 20hp increase over a stock engine with basically no mechanical modifications.

Aside from the peak torque curve the modifications I have made have vastly improved part throttle and transient engine response. The engine feels big all over and is totally effortless to drive. I can't get enough of it! The 944 has always been stated as difficult to tune, I am glad to have breached that barrier. Long live the 944!

Nice results, congrats!

So how much timing over the standard map have you added to get these results?

I don't actually know what the standard ignition timing is for a 2.5 8V. I built mine on the road and then tweaked it on the dyno. This was mapped on 95 octane and we did prob 20 power runs with no det, we also gave it a good hammering up some very steep inclines on the A39 through Porlock. I would attribute the gains to a combination of a fine tune, improved intake air flow and improved spark. When I get another car and do the upgrades incrementally I will know for sure.

Its hard to read your maps but I did find with both the 2.7 and the 968 engine that I was able to use quite agressive timing. It never got as far as the dyno but fuel economy (40+ mpg at illegal cruise) and performance seemed good.
Congrats anyway, fitting a standalone sytem and making it work is one thing, but designing it from scratch is somthing else altogether.

well done Tom, things are looking good for future 944 modifying nutters...:)

Thanks all! I really hope this can become a good thing for the 944 tuner! Can't wait to get my turbo on the rollers!
