I've had an idea!!!! Freecycle!!

I think it's a great idea. I can offer some parts. How about a full 86 lux engine, suffered low oil pressure and started knocking. Must be worth a few quid to just weigh in!

I've got loads of litlte bits I've picked up over the years, must take some pics as they're all free to a good home. Two nice doors in Guard's Red I'd like to shift as well, but I suspect they might be worth more held on to for a few years!

Have any of you ever experienced Freecycle?

No?

Ok I'll explain.

What you do is offer goods free in return for being able to take goods from someone else for free.

This is how it works. You advertise a part on here free to a good home. And in return you can take a part that someone else is giving away.I'm not talking about big things that are worth alot of money ,but more like the little things that you have lying in the garage that you know you will never use.

I recently sent a part to a forum member as it came as part of a bundle that I bought from e-bay.I paid alow price for the lot and got the bit I wanted for a fraction of the cost that Porsche would have charged me.So by passing on the bits I didn't need I keep another car going ( not really but you know what I mean). The bits I gave away I would never have used and they would have lay in the garage for the next few years or on ebay unsold.

So there you have it a free exchange of parts

If you think about it it makes sense and it stops the more unscrupulus people out there from ripping us of by selling bits for more than they are worth.

What does everyone think?

I think its an excellent idea and have come across similar on other car forums. Those clubs introduced rules to prevent any one person claiming everything that was offered as a freebie, so this would probably need to be looked at. It may be an idea that when a person offers something for free they could also list something they are after themselves and go to the top of the pecking order should that item come up. I know it’s alright me saying this but appreciate it’s easily said and difficult to implement. Another good idea I have seen working on other car forums was what could be termed as ‘Porsche Mail’ where members travelling up and down the country could pick items up on their travels thus saving postage.

sounds a good idea to me... swapping items no longer needed for something that is useful makes complete sense to me. Pete

Do we have to limit this to Porsche parts? Then again, I can't think of anyone who'd want my in-laws!

I think it's a good idea and I am pleased that you guys think so too.I will do a bit of work and try to establish some rules of engagement on it and then hopefuly paul will agree and we can have it at the top of the list like porsche spotting etc. I think a basic will be you have to give away in order to recieve. This will stop people taking advantage I hope.Maybe we could run it as a kind of "swap shop" but without Noel Edmunds and Keith Cegwin. It's just that I feel we all spend a fair bit of our hard earned with Porsche or on ebay etc on bits that other people have and don't need.

Just an idea of a rule that could be put in place; each time somebody takes advantage of a part on offer their name goes at the top of the list of lets say 10 names. Each time somebody else takes advantage of a freebie they go to the top and you move down one place. Only when your name is no longer in the list of 10 names can you lay claim to any further items.

Colin, Speaking of those hatch release mechanism bits, I can't PM as your inbox is full, but they arrived today so thanks very much - they are just what I needed, and will be going on the car tomorrow morning (as soon as the rain stops...)

No problem mate.I'm sorry it took so long work has been mental recently. But at least youv'e got it now and your hatch will work as it should. We want photo's of how you fitted the bits and and aphoto of you hatch working.

It is a great idea and myself and Mrs Mas love Freecycle. We like putting things on at least as much as receiving them. The only thing to bare in mind is that freecycle works well as you have local 'groups' and you drive round and collect the item it keeps postage totally out of the loop. I suspect we will be in a slightly different situation with Porsche bits :p but things will get dropped at meets and chained along by folk. Also beware of professional mumpers who want everything to sell it , the scurge of Freecycle. I travel Stanstead to North London and back daily if it helps anyone. Cheers Mas

Ok Mr McNulty Can you please pop this at the top next to the spares listing. You could call it swap shop or something simmilar.I think the best thing to do is let people post what they have and let everyone sort them selfs out. Simple rules You must be a posting member of this Forum to use the service. You must give away in order to recieve. one for one. It's up to the people giving away to arange post and payment for post with taker It's up to everyone to keep a look out for scammers If you see a sacammer then post name on the section and everyone will stay away from them. If we all play fair it will work and be a good source of parts for us.

I am that forum member and have been able to use the left-over parts that Colin very kindly sent me to solve my hatch release problem - here: http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=694824

Ah ha a use for the clutter in my garage. I don't want anything in return but I have 2 new/boxed 6x4" 'Ground Zero' speakers. They sounds excellent but only fit in the back - not the front doors due to depth of magnets. I also have a Guards red wing mirror housing, a lux thermostat and probably a whole hoard of other stuff (I'll have to have a look). Regards, Ben
