What is the current tyre choice for a 1999 C2

I have now owned my 1999 C2 manual for 5 years and having fitted it with Pirelli P Zero N rated tyres when I brought it they are due for replacing over the winter months. I have 265/35 ZR 18 93 Y (N rated) on the rear and 225/40 ZR 18 88 Y (N rated) on the front. Plenty of tread left but age now means they must be changed.

I had a good look round at the recent 996 birthday event at RAF Cosford and there was a lot of different manufacturers tyres on the cars there.

I’ve been happy with the Pirelli but they wonder what the current tyre of choice is.

+1 for Michelin,
I have Pirelli P Zeros and I don't like them, and I will be replacing them with PS4.
good luck

Always preferred Michelins to Pirellis, I think most of the feedback when other's have asked the same question has been a thumbs up for Michelin.

I've got Pirelli P Zero Rosso's that were all new in 2018. I've done a hair over 10k miles and the rears are already looking a bit sad ... and its not like I drive like a yob or do track days. Sticky yes, longevity not so much.

One thing I would have a look at is the pressures. Its 36psi front 44psi rear recommended for my C4S Cab but the 44 in the rear is way too much, its toasting the centre of the tyre faster ... which admittedly could be biasing my opinion of the Pirelli's.

Thanks for your comments.
I run mine at those pressures. I've had no problems with the Pirelli tyres. I jsut need to swap them because of age rather than wear.
March is the "to do" date so i shall be looking at the Michelins then.

Thanks Steve. Interesting to know. I'll get my geometry checked again but my last report from only 1500miles ago shows it as perfect across the board.
At the moment I have 1.5mm more wear in the center compared with the two edges.

I have PS4s (plural not PS4Ss) on mine in the same sizes as yours, which are noticeably better than the in 235/35 front, and 285 rear Kumho PS71 and LE Sports respectively that were on the car when I bought it. I run mine at 39psi rear, and 32psi front on the road and am seeing even wear.

OK so I went to Protyre in Exeter yesterday to buy my Michelin PS 4 or 5 tyres. Went here because I had been here previously with R15 on a demonstration evening and was impressed. Steve (nice guy) there went in their system and the PS 4 and 5s are not N4 rated by Porsche. Only the PS2 tyre. Phoned Andy at SCS Porsche my independent and an R15 member and host of many events and he said that he was aware of this issue and he had seen some Audi rating being used by some Porsche owners. Apparently some companies are asking serious money to rate products and hence the Michelins weren’t rated by Porsche.
Anyway, back at Priotyre, the Pirelli tyres (225/40 18) are out of stock with a back order of 35 tyres and no date from Pirelli on any delivery date.
So after that long winded ramble what rating is anyone happy with on the Michellin tyres so I can ring round.

Steve

As long as you don't have a Porsche warranty there is nothing stopping you putting whatever tyres you want on.

If you get PS4S with the correct load and speed rating, everything else is subjective.

In the 14 years I’ve had my 99 C4 I have had many tyre brands , Continental sport contact were really good but the rears only lasted 3000 miles ! Pirelli rosso seemed to last better , Bridgestone potenza ? Seemed a hard tyre wear wise but seemed to have a harsh ride, I’m currently on Michelin PS 4 , been on around a year and seem good. Also I got them from Kwik fit , full set for under £600 , must have been lucky as they were on offer , N rated too. ??
