996 Starts, idles…. And dies

Hi All,

A few weeks ago now my car died on the motorway as if I had stalled it under light throttle application, no warning lights, no other prior warning.

The car wouldn’t restart and was recovered home, the RAC identified it as a fueling issue, likely fuel pump, so I thought I’d have a go at fixing it myself.

The symptoms I had on the side of the road and when first getting it back were that it would crank but wouldn‘t fire at all. Use of easy start gas would however get it to fire

I firstly replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter which made no difference. I then replaced the fuel pressure regulator which improved things but didn’t fix them, it means that it now starts by itself if not cranked for a period of time and then will slowly die after a few seconds of idle. If I blip the throttle during this brief idle it instantly dies. If I try and restart it straight away it cranks and will lumpily try to fire but wont start.

I’ve checked some of the more accessible vacuum lines and found one split and one disconnected so fixed those but it hasn’t helped. I have a friend who is going to lend me a vacuum gauge and a smoke machine for testing for vacuum leaks so I will be checking for that in the next week.

I’ve also checked that the new fuel pump is actually working by running the pump whilst the fuel filter drains into a jerry can, however, I’ve noticed that I don’t get any fuel returning to the fuel tank!
Does anyone know if this is normal, why it might happen, and/or how to fix it?

Thanks
