How to tell if car has has had a conversion to look like 964

Bought a 911 a number of years ago now but I always wondered if it had been updated. It was first registered in 1988 and has a 911 serial but looks like a 964 - 964s also came out in 1989 so a year too early. The problem is that it looks almost too good - I cant see how it was updated as there are no indications it has been - it looks just like genuine aging of a car from 1988. The colours in the boot are an exact match for the paintwork - I cant see any additional welding/cutting , it all looks too clean, but its a year too early to look like a 964.
Are there any clues that I can look for to see if it has been modified?

Very mysterious! according to this you can check the vin number. Should be WPOZZ96ZS?4????
also there are lots of details which are different and hard to replicate such as the engine compartment slam panel shape (cutout for aircon/power steering?). I think the fresh air vents are different too.

So an '88 911 but a Euro Targa.
The Electric hood all looks original. Would have to be a major change to convert. Unless it's not the original vin but there rest including the year all lines up. Would you go to that level of detail on swapping a vin but not get the body type?

Not sure if I understand the question correctly or not - but a 964 will have more modern front and rear suspension than the previous Carrera

Look inside the rear wheel arches and see if you can see the ends of the rear torsion bar suspension. There's normally a pop-out disc in the outside of the wing as well to coincide with it for extracting the torsion bar - though this bit could be cosmetically altered - not the torsion bar though.

If you have torsion bar then must be Carrera? If not, and you have conventional coil over dampers, then it's 964?

Front suspension would be just a damper and no spring for Carrera. And 964 would be conventional coil over shock

Thanks for the responses. I was pretty comfortable that this is a 3.2 Carrera and for Neil's post, it has a torsion bar and not coils.
The question was really about where can I see the join? It must have a lot of new panels so I wondered if it was easy to spot where the new joins the old?
 
No new panels required for that mod, no welding, no real cutting either. Bumpers and sills just bolt/clip/screw on, rear lid fits easy enough on the old hinges. A very popular modification in the early 90's. Targa to cab easy enough to do as well.
 
Thanks for the response. I thought the change was a lot more invasive, if it is just bolting on some bumper kits it makes sense. Thinking about it the Targa shape, removing the back glass and hoop should mean adding a convertible is fairly easy. Even the locking mechanism is similar.

No welding or joining needed for external and body panels - all the same. Think it's just front and rear bumper swap. And by looks of it rear engine lid in your case with raising spoiler. Then add on sill covers

It's only chassis, suspension pickup points and inner front wings that different between carerra and 964 (over simplified)

Normally easy to "roll back) to impact bumper etc

Gear stick/centre console/heater controls also differ between the 2 models. Can clearly see that's a 3.2.
