Oulton Park Gold Cup - apologies for gatecrashing the Club parking but it wasn't my fault!

I can call you a T**T anytime you like :ROFLMAO:- obviously some form of status culture there. However several persons I chatted too on Saturday didn't bother coming in their Porsches because they decided they wouldn't get to park in the Porsche Club area yet when they looked ,there were several non -qualifying cars - parked with the other pre 2000 classics? -a massive total of around 22 cars![]

Morning everyone [:)]

Yes, that was my ridiculously modern 718 GT4 parked at the back of the Club area at the Oulton Park Gold Cup yesterday which I know was supposed to be for pre-2000 cars only. We had general entry tickets and turned up nice and early, as we usually do to these events, and were heading for general parking just inside the main entrance when we were waved/directed towards the centre of the circuit by an MSV steward. Thinking there was another general parking area I spoke to the next MSV person I saw who was directing me to the Club parking area. After a quick chat about the situation I was told to speak to the next MSV steward along and they would sort it out. So onwards I go...

Just outside the Club's area I was asked for my parking pass so yet again I explained the situation saying that yes I was a Club member but my car was too new to display so I did not have the appropriate pass. Rather than turn me around and send me back against the traffic they told me to park in the Club area. So I stuck my car in the far corner trying to keep it out of the way.

So many apologies for gatecrashing the pre-2000 area Club parking, but hopefully you can see it was due to an MSV error. I'm not in the habit of making myself look like a self-entitled Porsche owner so it was a bit embarassing to say the least. I did try and find an R5 origaniser to speak to but I only saw Matt deep in coversation with another member at one point and when I looked again to see if I could catch him he'd gone. I couldn't see anyone else I recognised I'm afraid.

So, there you have it. Sorry again, and if you do see my car knocking about at future events pleae don't think the owner is a complete (_insert appropriate insult here_) - thank you!

Not quite sure what you're talking about re. status culture - maybe you can elaborate? Thanks.

My post was a true apology as I know it was a classic Porsches event, I had no intention of parking in the Club area so yet again I apologise. I wonder if the other more modern cars had the same experience as I did i.e. got waved through incorrectly?

Good morning Dave,

I am sure that none of our R5 members will have had an issue with you parking where you did and if they did, that should be there problem not yours.

I personally, happen to love almost all Porsche’s whether they are old or new. There is not another sports car manufacturer that has evolved and continues to stay true to its heritage than Porsche. To my mind the club should be just as much about the people as it is about the actual cars. The cars just bring like minded people together to share our passion for the brand and to enjoy Porsche related experiences, events, drives and social gatherings together.

I think that it’s a shame that MSV decided to restrict this year’s Gold Cup to just Classic Porsche’s and it certainly put us off from attending for the first time in years, that said we did thoroughly enjoy the Supercar Pageant in July.

I look forward to catching up with you again soon.

Martin

Cheers Martin. I just wanted to make it clear to everyone that I'm not one of "those" people, and I agree with your sentiments completely [:)]

Hope to see you somewhere soon!

As to you being one of “those” people, I couldn't possibly comment 😉😂😂

We were there on Saturday and had booked at the Moss Fogarty Hospitality , first time ever, so parking wasn’t a problem. However we considered that the total attendance numbers seemed a shadow of previous years, not sure if it was due to the date change from August B/H, restrictions on post 2000 cars, or just current economic situation. Definitely not such a good atmosphere.

I wouldn't dispute the comments ref the numbers turning out etc. However, the numbers we had at the Supercar Pageant are probably much more closely representative of the numbers we have had at the Gold Cup in prior years. Only time will tell if MSV have made the right call on the dates and tightly curating the age of cars required on the infield. It's a trend though, as Silverstone Classic did the same thing in terms of infield parking. Money talks in these matters and declining attendances may well cause a rethink in future years, but its very much in MSV's hands to make those calls. As a committee we may well emphasise the Supercar Pageant in coming years as its more inclusive of the R5 members than Gold Cup in its present format.

The Gold Cup obviously plays very heavily on nostalgia for those who were there back in the day and any other fans of the old stuff. We only went as my wife loves the off-track stuff there rather than the racing(!) and although there were younger folks present they were by far in in the minority.

In comparison, and for me personally, the Supercar Pageant is a much better event for younger car fans and the whole family. Kids love the latest models and get to see them up close in the car park/displays and also see them race on track. Hopefully the Club's own racing series' will be present at the event again next year too as that's obviously very relevant to us members and provides great entertainment as a support race to the GT Cup.

There's room for both and I can see why MSV have split the events up as the attending demographic is quite different for each. The one with broadest appeal, if you're going to hang your hat on one or the other, has to be the Supercar Pageant in my opinion.
