bore score

hello, i think my 911 has developed bore score, does anyone know a good garage i can get this seen too. I live in Potton Bedfordshire.

Hi,

What makes you think you've got bore scoring? Reason I ask is that I'm thinking of getting a 997.1 4S and having read a huge amount of posts on the 'tinterweb you'd think that every single 997.1 had an engine made from margarine!!!

This is what I've gleaned from the internet to what highlightes possible bore scoring:

• Near Side tailpipe darker than the drivers side. Reason being that the right bank of bores on the engine are more susceptible to scoring and as the exhaust crossed over the oil burns out of the near side/left tailpipe.

• Knocking when the engine is running. Having seen a vid on YT the sound is similar to a pneumatic 'whacker plate' and a very obvious knocking sound.

• The big thing that does point to scoring is a sudden increase in oil consumption. Some people report using 1ltr every 100 miles!!!

If you do have blackened tailpipes then it could be a faulty AOS, but you would expect to see blackening on both tailpipes.

Have you had anyone put a scope down the bores to check for scoring?

there is a knocking when the engine is running, the near side exhaust is darker.

From what I've read the guys are Hartech are pretty much the go to people (https://www.hartech.org/), but not exactly down the road for you.

Out of interest what model of 911 have you got? I'm looking at getting a 997.1 4S but will be getting a PPI done before I buy it.

With regards to anyone thinking of getting an engine rebuild, you need to go to someone who really knows Porsche engines and without question Hartech are
one of the best in the country at giving you the advice you need for the problem you have. see the following link to their video talk with us.

Hello.

It may be worth your while having a natter with Angus at AMS in Kimpton near Hitchin.

He is your almost on doorstep and is a good bloke to know.

He fully repaired and rebuilt a broken 996 3.6 motor for a friend of mine (who thought it beyond fixing and was going to scrap it) and he also did my own 996 3.4 motor. They also offer customers a free Saturday morning health check lasting 1 to 2 hours.

Hartech are probably the best people to speak to but Angus is much nearer and will give you a clear idea of any problems your car may have.
