992 Turbo S - Wheel scoring

Has anyone experience this? With the Turbo S's 420mm front discs and 10-pot calliper the distance between calliper and rim is tiny. Foreign objects (usually stones) can get caught in the gap at the back of the calliper and effectively act like a lathe on the inside of the wheel. It's happen to my car 3 times (twice with previous owner and once with me). The noise is horrendous and it's a matter of seconds while the damage is done!! I had my OPC repair them last time.

Yes indeed and it damages the rim, but it's not usually terminal unless you leave it to grind away. Usually, reversing the car dislodges the stone. It's luck of the draw really and you appear to have been unlucky. Maybe try to avoid particularly gravelly sections of road wherever possible.

BTW - it's worse when a stone lodges in the calliper and scores the rotor - now that does become expensive to repair.

I had the same with my 2021 Turbo S. Front wheel, and quite noticeable on the black internal of the wheel. I have a gravel drive so think that was the culprit so now am very careful to drive slowly on it and check for stones before I set off. I think its just a hazard of massive calipers close the the actual wheel

No doubt the OPC's will see this a lot and refurb wheels routinely before selling one used
 
I had the same issue on both my 991 and 992 Turbos. In fact just had the same on my 992 GT3. It's so annoying!! Unfortunately I live down an unmade road which has lots of gravel on it and the tyres pick it up and throw it everywhere even at very low speed.
I was thinking about trying to stick something onto the callipers that would stop the states getting behind them. Any ideas?

Robust PPF on the inside the rims may save the surface to some extent..
On our rally cars, we used to fit scraper strips cut from polypropylene sheet. These would be fixed between the callipers and rims to deflect mud and gravel.

Brilliant - That’s the sort of thing I was thinking of. I guess you’d need to fashion some kind of fixing to the calliper….
 
Positioning of the front callipers at 3 o'clock tends to make them self-cleaning, whereas the rears at 9 o'clock clog due to the rotation of the rims.

Picked up my new 992 Turbo S and scored the wheels on day 2....am I just unlucky or bad design!!

Ouch. I was so looking forward to ceramics coming on mine in October. Now I’ll be checking for scoring every time I drive it. I’m still unsure if there’s anything we can do to prevent it happening…..?
 
I have ask my dealer what the options are.... surely there should be a mod..!!
I'm now left with marked wheels that annoys me.

Just a thought Si, is this damage covered under the Porsche alloy wheel insurance….. which would then incentivise them into launching a mod for it?
 
Unfortunately I don't have Alloy wheel insurance, not that it was offered either.
Do Sytner actually offer it.

Don't think they would retrospectively provide this.

Insurance is £300 but a specialist wheel refurbisher should be able to repair your wheel for much less than this!

Car back from Detailers and PPF applied, looks really nice apart from wheel scoring on the fronts. Ive picked
up a spare set of wheels/Tyres cheap, so will get fronts re-furbed at end of season... run the standard set over the winter.

Car is amazing to drive and very very very fast... worth the wait, not sure about the overs!!

Congratulations, that's a very smart looking car.

I particularly like the exclusive wheels that set the body colour off nicely. The c/f door mirrors are splendid too.

Thanks for the comments about the car, I love it… apart from the scoring on the wheels of course.

I wrote to Porsche GB about the scoring and have been asked to take to my dealer to get them to review the wheels. They have opened a case and asked for the dealer to review my concerns.. and advise accordingl.
Im not holding my breath….

Si, one month on, just wondering how you got on with your scoring? I don’t have mine yet but have the same potential issue with the larger diameter caliper.
 
Hi Nigel,
Funny enough got the wheels back today.
I dropped off with Porsche Leicester to inspect the scored wheels and report back
to Porsche UK.
I then had a call to say Porsche Leicester we’re going to refurbish the wheels free of charge
as a goodwill gesture. Fair play to Akil who sorted the wheels at Leicester. The wheels are back and as new. I’ve polished and stored for winter. Currently running a standard set on Pirelli tyres which seem to ride better than the Goodyears.
so all in all worked out well, not sure what the long term fix is and should this happen again
what the outcome will be. Not sure how many times I can refurbish a wheel..
