With some much needed guidance from Martin i have now booked the hotel. im looking into the crossing. having never driven from the uk into and through europe, any pointers on the best times to travel on euro tunnel much appreciated

Eurotunnel crossings are currently being subject to certain external factors so not sure that there is any better time to travel. The lack of P & O crossings at the port of Dover is causing additional demand for tunnel crossings and impacting on HGV traffic on M20 and A20 leading to delays getting to Eurotunnel. Lorries waiting to go into Dover port are being stacked on 2 lanes of M20 with a contraflow in operation. See Highways agency -operation Brock.
We are going over to Le Mans next week so will find out what things are like but expecting a delayed departure as there will not doubt be many others making the same journey. So wise to allow plenty of time to get to Eurotunnel.

Would be worthwhile getting the car booked into a high carriage as the standard carriages have certain sections where the width is reduced and risk damaging the alloys. The Eurotunnel booking system now allocates vehicles according to DVLA Registration number so to request a high carriage you need to either book on line and phone afterwards or do the booking by phone. Eurotunnel are aware of the problem and will allocate you to a higher carriage.

Ypres is a very interesting city to visit, a visit the the Menin Gate for the last post is a must and a very moving experience. Of course a battlefield tour should not be missed. Also Belgian beer and chocolates to be sampled!
