964 C4 purchase advice

Hi, I am looking for some advice. I am looking at a 964 C4 and just had a pre-purchase inspection. I would really appreciate any feedback/ advice on the following findings.
-oil leaks at tensioners cam covers and timing covers.
-Very slight leak from rear main seal.
thanks all.

I think oil leaks from the cam and timing covers are to be expected and fairly normal given the age of the car. The guy who services my 993 tells me that almost every time but also says that it is not excessive - but, of course, can be cured. I guess it depends on the extent and degree of oil.

WRT to the rear main seal I'm not so sure. This would be near the clutch so potentially could be an eventual problem requiring the clutch to be changed would it not? Which is normally expensive.

If that's all that the PPI found and you like the car you could have a bargaining point on price, especially if you were to get quotes to replace the cover gaskets and a clutch change.

Leaks are obviously not ideal or how it left Germany but the amount of oil could be subjective when discussing a price reduction.

I'm no expert (did you guess?) but have had some experience of what you mention and can only relate the guidance given to me.

If that's all the PPI came up with then I personally would go with that - depends of course the asking price.

Yes, I also have very small leak emanating from the cam covers since I've had this C4 (10 years), but it's pretty negligible. Tends to gravitate to the bottom engine crankcase when the engine is hot and in my case only 1 or 2 drops onto my drip tray. Very acceptable. Might get round to replacing the gaskets, which can be done in situ, but don't see the need for now.

Had too a rear main seal leak when I bought the C4, and as I was having an RS clutch and flywheel swap out I got this done at the same time. Point this out to the seller and then get a second (independent) look and get it priced up along with a new clutch (very dependent what year model this C4 is) - better still price up an RS clutch and flywheel replacement as the small additional cost (few hundred extra) makes it worth it. Another look at the seal leak may say run around with it as is with view to to get it done as a winter downtime job.

Hopefully you have a contingency budget on top of your buying cost to iron out some small creases and a few fixes. If I can help with any questions just post up here or PM me any time (or even go and check out renlist). Good luck and use it hard!

Can you find when the last valve adjustment was done ? Its due every 12k and requires new gaskets to the cam covers. Could be an extra reason to get the leak from there done.
