Hi as anybody changed any of the exhaust on there 718 gts,spyder,gt4. I have a gts on order, And have driven a few but the sound is no way near as good as my now sold 981 2.7 with pse. I am planning to just change the back box as is easy swap as just bolted. Then swap back at service time. After 3year warranty is up,Then to change the manifolds with 200cell sports cats. If anybody as changed there exhaust which manufacturer did you use and how are you finding it.

There are quite a few options out there now, most people are opting for the JCR titanium silenced system although there still aren't lots of people who have made the change. It's far more common in the US where they have the advantage of unmonitored over axle pipes which contain the OPF filter matrix, on our cars we have an active matrix plus sensors.

Drone is a big issue on all 4.0 Caysters which is why Porsche fitted a pretty quiet exhaust and a valve control system that's closed more than you'd expect in order to mask it. Opening up the system brings the drone out, mostly between 1800rpm - 2800rpm. At slow speeds and pottering around you're going to hear it. I've not heard one in person yet, but JCR claim that their system is drone free. My Ninemeister silencer is not but I've got used to it now and drive round it by keeping the revs up and/or being lighter on the throttle at low speeds. On full chat it's great though, and the biggest change is the overall tone of the exhaust note. It has a lovely deep rumble and gives the car its character back rather than sounding a bit generic. It also looks very aggressive too.

Valve controllers are an option but I found that the standard OEM exhaust with the valves open droned too, so with a replacement silencer this effect will be increased even more. I'm not a fan of them. However, "Mannylon" here on PCGB and PistonHeads has a BC Fabs silencer plus a valve controller and was happy with his car when it was modded, although I've not seen him post online for a while so I don't know if he's still enjoying it or not.

My advice, for what it's worth, is to just change the rear silencer to whichever brand you want to go with. This video explains most of the options and their pros and cons:

Just ordered my GTS 4.0 and been doing a little research on exhaust systems.

Does anyone have any experience of the Cargraphic back box and their valve controller. I have been told it does not drone when the valves are open at lower revs.

Obviously, I haven't discussed an exhaust swap with the OPC [:D] but I was speaking to a chap who used to work for Ferrari and now provides high-end third-party exhaust systems for the marque. This is what he told me (see below) - would be interested in hearing others thoughts.

"We install sport cats without the GPF, and then a small module for the OBD port which cancels the warning light pertaining to the high flow cats and GPF delete.

With regards to warranty – no! It won’t invalidate warranty. I worked for Ferrari for a number of years before joining SCP so I can say that from a place of authority. Dealers will often tell you that it will, but as much as they try Ferrari’s internal policy is not capable of overruling UK law – which clearly enshrines your right as a consumer to modify your car to a reasonable level without fear of invalidating warranty. The Law in question is called Block Exemption law,

-Block exemption Law makes blanket warranty invalidation illegal. The law is crystal clear. The reason this law came about was to prevent unjustified warranty claim rejection - consider an example where you change the tyres on your car, and the manufacturer invalidates the warranty on your suspension or you change the wipers and they refuse to honour the warranty on an engine defect....... This law is called BER2002 and further states that as long as the correct service schedule, and equivalent part quality is maintained, that you don't even have to have your car serviced by the authorised dealers or use original parts to maintain warranty! You can have your Bugatti serviced at Kwik Fit and you cannot have the warranty invalidated!


- related to this however, you cannot expect Ferrari to warrant a part which isn't theirs. Nor can they be expected to warrant a technical failure relating to a part that isn't theirs. That's only fair.

We cover this ourselves:

1: We warrant all parts we supply with a lifetime warranty. So that's your exhaust covered.

2. We warrant any technical failures that could possibly result from the installation of the products we supply.
Note: in the 17 years we've been enhancing Supercars we've never ever had to do this on any failure like this. Primarily because our products themselves like your Exhaust are really high quality (they're expensive for a reason) and furthermore we just won't fit/recommend anything that may cause an issue – what’s the point?

This way we entirely allay any warranty invalidation nonsense that so many people are misinformed about.

That said even the dealers and service managers can sometime spout incorrect information. Some dealers know their stuff, but not every dealer know the law so bear that in mind and also bear in mind that if someone does misinform you, they are actually breaking the law.

What they SHOULD say is that you've lost the warranty on your exhaust as explained above, but that's it. And as explained above you're fully covered by us! (on the basis that we supplied the parts of course)."

 
If you change the exhaust and then the engine goes bang, Porsche may claim that the exhaust caused the fault. Do you think you have the knowledge, money, time and effort to fight them? Also the Block Exemption Law only applies to the three year factory warranty, not the Porsche extended warranty which is essentially an insurance product.

I've gone down the route of modifications with my eyes wide open, and in my view others should do the same. You can't have your cake and eat it.
 
Aye. Was referring to the standard three year warranty that comes with a new car not the extended one.
 
Just something else to throw into the mix Ian. I’m not sure that deleting the GPF is UK-legal because you’re tampering with the car’s emission system and may well invalidate your insurance too?

It maintains the OPF so would not be an issue for emissions or the MOT when due. Shouldn't be a problem getting this covered on specialist insurance, I would think.

Probably worth checking with your insurer, Iain.

I've just switched out the the rear silencer on my car for the reasons Jeff points out, and have had no issues. Replacing emissions equipment with other non-OEM emissions equipment is probably a bit of a grey area and prone to a lot of interpretation and/or problems!
 
The only other point I’d make Ian is that questions about the fitment of after-market exhausts seems to take up a lot of space on this forum! As I’ve said on many occasions, the main problem is that unless you’re able to drive in a car with the modified system fitted to sample different driving conditions you’ve no idea whether or not it will suit your requirements. Watching video clips recorded using someone’s phone is next to useless in my opinion.

Maybe you can get along to a track day to see if you can cadge a ride with someone who’s fitted a modified system?
