New oil leak just happened

Hi all
The dreaded oil leak has just sprung, i have a small amount amount of fuel coming from the injector and is on the list to sort but now i can see some oil dripping from under the car.
I put the car up on the ramp and its not just oil but can also also see some fluid dripping from the power steering pump.
I think its going to be a case of a pump replacement as most guys say on the forum that the recon kit is not an easy job, but do 944’s have a common area where they leak oil from?

Welcome to 944 ownership, leaks are not new to these cars but they can be pretty dry with a little TLC and regular maintenance. Steering fluid, most commonplace is from the rack or pipework, sometimes the pump but check the other two first. Pump replacement?, unlikely to be the cause, these things are very well built, the rack can fail yes, the pump is much more robust. For example, my own car with 218k miles on the clock is still running with the original steering and oil pumps, in fact, most of the ancillaries are original. Oil can leak from numerous places, most common is the main crank front seal, it can also come from the sump seal, balance shaft housings both front and rear (most likely rear), and the cam tower housing. The rear main seal can leak but is not as common. I noted in one of your other posts that you were considering 10w40? IMHO that is too thin and will leak, especially if the seals are fairly old, 20w50 is my preferred oil, no leaks. Have you by chance just put some 10w40 oil in the engine?

No not yet, i have got a tech doing the belts water pump all the rollers with oil and filter service a week Saturday.
I have bought 10w40 semi ready as I watched a few youtube video’s of the back roads by Liam Freeman and that is what he went with that oil plus its something that is also in the manual as fine to use.
I was going to order a front end oil seal kit for the fitter to change out while he is doing the belts.
 
Very common for the return line to leak at the reservoir - sometimes it’s as easy as tightening the jubilee clips. Sometimes it’s as complicated as a centre shaft swap on a new BMW pump and a refurbed steering rack with new lines. [8|]
 
On my car it was a leak from the rack. OEM parts silly money. My indie got the rack refurbished...plenty of people around who do that I beleive! Good luck.
 
When I had the undertrays off recently, I noticed the rack had been replaced on my car. I forget the name on the sticker now, but it was one of the big auto parts suppliers.
 
during my 20+ years of ownership, IIRC the reservoir pipe has been replaced/repaired once, rack pipe replaced twice and the rack itself rebuilt with new seals once.
