Hi all.

I thought I'd introduce myself here and present my journey with my 991 Turbo, this being my first Porsche!

I live in the North East and hope to join R3 and other region events whenever opportunities arise. I am aslo a member on Pistonheads and the North East Supercar Owner's Club. I am a Chartered Naval Architect by profession.

First to give some background. I have generally modified my cars to varying degrees. A previous favourite was an R32 Golf:

As well as the 991, I currently run a 335d (remapped), an Audi S1 (full exhaust, intercooler, remap, wheels / tyres, wrapped in places) and a heavily modifed supercharged Mk1 MX5:

As things currently stand, these cars are all keepers.

Anyway, back to the Porsche! As luck would have it I bought the car just before Covid first hit us last year. I was working in France at that time and the lockdown scuppered my original plans to collect the car from Surrey and take back to the North East. In the end the car was trailered up and immediately stored away until lockdown eased.

Delivery day, 25/03/2020:

At least the weather was unseasonably good. I was a very exciting and memorable day, although not as imagined during the many months of planning and years of dreaming.

Coincidently the car was originally bought from Porsche Newcastle and I have had a chance to discuss it with the dealer rep. who assisted the first owner.

It's exactly what I wanted - a Turbo in an unconventional (but fairly high) spec, aero pack, pan roof, Bose etc.

Due to Covid opportunities we scarce to use the car in 2020 sadly but we still managed the odd meet and a run around the NC500:

I focused on cosmetic items - getting my plates on, sorting the corroded centrelocks, a full paint correction and PPF:

Exhaust 1

The main drawback with the car as standard in my opinion was the (lack of) engine sound and the exhaust not having active valves. The volume level (and lack of control) seemed more GT than supercar. Additionally during research I discovered quite how heavy and inefficient the standard exhaust and cats were.

There are obviously a huge number of options with exhaust replacements. I settled on a Fabspeed Valvetronic Supersport X-Pipe system, incorporating very good quality HJS cats.

The system is effectively straight through with the valves open (love it!) but not much louder than standard with them closed. Above isn't the best pic of how the tailpipes look because it's wide-angle. See later pics for a better impression.

The exhaust fitment was literally the very last thing done on the car before winter hibernation 2020. I like setting myself a project over the winter and decided to focus on...

Wheels and Tyres

I love how wheels make a huge and easily switchable effect to a car's appearance so I like having more than one set of wheels for a car. Also it allows wheels to be refurbed and tyres changed separately to the car without putting it on blocks. I also wanted to see how Michelin PS4s effect the car. I didn't feel the need to change from standard wheel sizes.

I assembled all the tools needed to change-out centrelock wheels, then I settled on the Signature SV101 forged wheel. I sourced the correct 'N' PS4s from D&G Porsche North Shields, who also fitted the tyres perfectly when the wheels arrived/

Note I chose these before the 992 GT3 was revealed with quite a similar design :D The crisp edges and super metallic finish give these a high quality look in my opinion. The design seems a good balance of 'sporty' and classy, suiting a Turbo.

Also the PS4s seem much better than P-Zeros.

Exhaust 2 - Manifolds

As is the way, once the Fabspeed system was on the factory manifolds looked very 'pants' - heavy, crude etc.

I settled on the very highly rated Kline manifolds, complete with a 14(!) week lead time. Even the SS items weigh practically nothing so Titanium at twice the price didn't seem worthwhile. They were sourced and fitted by Cavendish Porsche:

That's a very sensible and well chosen set of modifications for your 991.2 Turbo. The Graphite Blue metallic paint and silver wheels suit the car very well indeed.
Also noted your opinion on the Michelin PS4S tyres being a big improvement compared to the P-Zeros. All keen drivers agree.

Enjoy your 991.2 Turbo.

Fabulous mods. Your wheels look very similar to my BBS F1 R wheels. Only mods i have carried out are a Europipe 50 cel exhaust fitted by Nine Excellence. I chose the EP as I believe its one of the only after market exhausts that does not require a remap (as far as I am aware). I've had circa £15k of OPC warranty claims inc two new VTGs over 5 years 34k miles. I really need to get 265 and 325 section tyres for both these and the OEM carbon wheels they'll fill the wheel arches out a bit better :)

Thanks Smurf. Yes, I looked at the BBSs, along with several other designs of this 'format'. The Signatures are stunning quality. The rarity of them and favourable exchange rate (at the time!) also swung it.

Ho-hum, it seems that Imgur going belly-up has lost all my photos in this thread :( This is the second time I've picked a photo site that's then gone under. Apologies but I can't be bothered to reupload them.

My Instagram survives though: 6cl2t

I should update on the car:

Remap

In May 2022 we took the car to the kings of 991 / 992 Turbo tuning, ESMotor. They do incredible work it must be said. They also have a hub-driven dyno, rather than rolling road - much more appropriate for big-power projects.

The car made 509whp on the baseline run.

At this stage I only wanted to release the untapped potential in the set-up as it stood (manifolds, cats, exhaust). The car was remapped in-line with ESM's 'entry level' product (all things are relative!). The headline stats are 686bhp (583whp) at 6,100rpm and 697lb.ft (945Nm) from 3,500 to 4,500rpm. ESM also figure the car with GPS:

1/8 mile in 6.63s
1/4 mile in 10.2s at 134mph
0-60 in 2.70s
0-120 in 8.56

To drive the car is totally transformed, there is more effect than even the numbers suggest. Economy is unchanged or possibly slightly improved.

Good solid numbers. My turbo s cab stock but with EP 2 after market exhaust.

1/4 mile 10.6 @ 134mph
0-60 mph 2.6 secs

I'll dig those other stats you have posted on my vbox when I can. The issue with many tuner cars is they are often slower than stock after a few laps on circuit. I'd have also had a £15k plus vat bill for two new VTGS if I'd tuned mine so happy to be a few tenths slower than you! [s1]

As an aside what wheel size and tyre combo did you go for They look like 265 and 325s I'm thinking about on 20s?

Good question, had to dig that out of my emails:

Wheels - 20x9 and 20x11.5
Tyres - 245/35 and 305/30 ZR20

Great looking Turbo and I love the colour. Good shout on the GT3 'style' alloys. they really suit the car.

As a side note, can I ask who did your car caricature in your first post?

Dan

I've just checked that 509whp so thats circa 580bhp as a base line at the crank. The thing with dynos is they are to be used as a base line so lets say the 540bhp that Porsche quote is accurate ish I'd guess the accurate figure your car is now putting out is circa 650PS on the nose. The stats prove it out too as I've done over 100 launches at these VMAX type events from when Smurf was new and never dipped below 10.6 secs for the qtr mile. It may have been at 133mph not 134mph too by the way I'm not sure where I put my stats from VMAX200 may seem small 1mph difference but every 1 mph faster requires circa 25bhp ish more. May seem like a small margin 4/10ths quicker over the quarter mile but I'd say thats on the money @ 650PS as 10.0 - 10.2 quarter mile at 134mph-137mph i.e. this is what stock 992 turbo s of friends were running all day long at VMAX200 pre CV19. I have a HD video racing these 992 turbos s inc youtuber JWW there really wasn't anything in it tbh one of the reasons I decided to keep my 991! The yanks on forums/youtube saw Smurf and thought I'd tuned mine. Genuinely have not. Bone stock with a free flowing EP2 Smurf was living with 992s quite comfortably. There is something very liberating doing 200mph in your new turbo. I've got it out of my system now but these turbos are amazing kit. Macho egos bruised in Lambos, Macs, R8 , 812 and F12 all had their doors blown off. :ROFLMAO:

You should maybe take yours up one day. You'll love it! Before you do though with that 650+ bhp tune you should really think about intercoolers. They do make a massive difference in terms of keeping temps cool on days out like VMAX now you've tuned yours. Its one of the reasons I didn't bother tuning Smurf as the mods lists grows arms and legs and then its a slippery slope to 1400bhp! I need to look after my kids not die!!

Let's not 'say the 540bhp that Porsche quote is accurate ish'. ESMotor are a well respected global tuner, they regularly deliver big power, record breaking, big money projects for very satisfied clients. To do so they must perform consistent, accurate and reliable dyno runs. It's fundimental to their business and success.

Manufacturer quoted values are often exceeded because they want the figures to be achievable in any conditions their customers experience. Also, the car was not stock when it arrived at ESM, the full exhaust system had already been replaced, including high flow cats.

ESM assure me that an intercoolers upgrade is not required for road use at my current power. I'm not particularly fussed about high speed run days. Not interested in bruising anyone's ego.
