Just bought a 997 Targa .. waited ages to get the colour and interior I wanted and wanted low mileage .. 29k .. few teething troubles .. new starter
motor and going in for small oil leak ( rocker cover gasket ) also think gearbox oil needs changing soon .. but all in good time .. anyone know what sort of money I should be paying for the gasket replacement at an independent ….. thx

Hello, and Welcome!
Very nice car, and quite rare, imo.
Insofar as the oil leak is concerned it will be a cam cover, not a rocker cover so the work to sort will be very involved and require a strip down of most of the exhaust, ignition and possibly bumper, on the side that needs the work. If it's not too bad a leak I'd leave it until a major service, as the sparkplugs, coil packs and heat shields all have to come off then anyway.

Gearbox oil isn't usually thought about until 100,000 miles or so, but given the low mileage of your car, you could either view it as barely used, or possibly needs changing seeing as it's clearly sat about a lot. The gearbox is sealed, so it's not anything like as bad as leaving old oil in an engine. I'd get the advice of an Indy, but I wouldn't worry about the gearbox yet. Get a feel for the car first as you might find some other housekeeping bits which are more important, again, given the low mileage / stood about nature of it.

Welcome to the club and 997 ownership!

Very nice looking car you have there, great colour combination with that interior.

Thank you chaps for your kind words .. as i said it took me ages to find one . I wanted either grey with sand or blue but they just don't come up for sale . I'm not a collector but own a classic car at a time and a 997 was on my bucket list and it certainly puts a smile on my face .... well at least when isn't leaking oil and the starter motor works [:)] and i thought it was best to buy one whilst i can still get in and out of one .... I sold a 1989 BMW E30 convertible to buy the 997 . I saw the 911 for sale on a Sunday afternoon put my BMW up for sale of Car n Classic Sunday night sold the BMW Monday morning and bought the 911 Monday afternoon ....Classic car markets bonkers at the moment ...

Welcome! Lovely car congratulations. How does it compare to the BMW?

Can I ask how much it was to replace your starter motor And who did it?

Don’t really compare apart from the colour scheme .. But beautifully built and bulletproof so I guess similar in that way … I have storage on a local farm and there is a car mechanic there … fortunately the starter motor gave up at the farm and not in the middle of nowhere so we pushed it across to the garage … bought a Bosch starter which I think came out at £200 after surcharge refund and £70.00 to fit it … As it wasn’t going anywhere and I’d know Rick the mechanic I was more than happy for him to do it … here’s the 3 series

Welcome to the marque! I don't think you will be disappointed. I have done substantial work to my car see photo. Reach out if you need advise, I'll be happy to assist if I can.

Thanks,

Kul
