996 Cabriolet roof randomly opens by itself

The roof on my 2003 996 has started operating entirely on its own. It sits quietly on the driveway and randomly decides to put the roof down all by itself. Has anyone any idea what the issue is?

Welcome Peter!

I would check the carpet under the passenger seat, to see if it is damp. The alarm control unit is unter there, and if it is wet it migh be giving a false signal for the roof to open.

Do you keep your key in a trouser pocket? Any chance the button could be pressed accidentally?

I’ve already done that Richard, thanks. It had been soaked through six months ago, but has been thoroughly dried out with no problems since then. The key in the pocket thing isn’t it either, that was my first thought, but it happens when the keys are safely tucked away in a drawer as well.

The other area that can give random electrical issues is the base plug on the ignition switch its a £20 part (With a compatible audi part) google it, access is under the dash but it's a bit of a fleible test Part number 99634701707. I have to say I would suspect the ECU under the seat if it has been damp in the past. Ian
