CTEK Charger From Porsche 996 Any Good On Gen1 Macan GTS

Hi All

Porsche 996 hopefully sold now looking for a Macan GTS.

I have been told that the chargers that are used on earlier Porsches such as 996 and 987 are not suitable for use on the Porsche Macan range.

Does any body know if this is correct, can you explain why they are different and what charger will I need to purchase once I find the right Gen 1 Macan GTS.

I currently have a CTEK MSX 5.0 charger that has been used on both a 996 911 and 987 Cayman S.

Thanks for your assistance

Trevor

That charger will be fine for your Macan.
You only need a different one when a lithium ion battery is fitted, but these are usually only in 992's and GT models.

Clive

I use the same CTEK charger on my 986 Boxster as well as my Macan S, it works just fine, but you need to change the battery type settings on the charger when you change cars as the Macan has an AGM battery which is different to the normal car battery.

Hi Thanks for the reply
Hoping to purchase 2018 Macan GTS on Tuesday.
Change the setting, how and to what?
Will look in the manual of course

Use the Mode Button *1* to change the LED setting to *AGM* (2).

Thanks for that its much appreciated.

Having owned 996 and 987 vehicles I have been told the batteries are of dubious quality. Not had a problem with any myself though.

Is this the same for the AGM type batteries on the Macan as I see they are alot of dosh to replace at over £400.

Thanks

I have an ‘Absorbent Glass Mat’ (AGM) battery fitted to my Macan Turbo, however it only seems to hold its charge at 11.8 volts. While I’ve never had a starting problem does anyone else have this issue or is this normal?

For a so-called premium manufacturer I’ve never understood why Porsche don’t choose to fit leading makes of battery such as Bosch and Varta which are used on most (or all?) VAG products, instead fitting obscure makes like Banner and Moll … who I think went bust!

Even more annoying is that if you have an extended warranty you’re forced to have the inferior (and very expensive) Porsche approved replacement.

All

I must say on both the 996 & Cayman I have just sold the batteries have been fine.

Both the 996 & Cayman S are only on there second battery. 996 is 19 years old & Cayman is 15 years old. I have owned the Cayman for 8 years and replaced the original battery myself. Complete history on 996 shows only one change.
I was told many years ago by a Porsche mechanic that the secret is to put them on the plug in charger if your not going to use the vehicle for more than 3 or 4 days and its worked for me. Hence the interest in the raising the post in the first place as the Macan will not be a daily driver/workhorse either
