Club Fuel Card

There are no Shell filing stations in my neck of the woods. There used to be one on the nearest Motorway junction, but that is a 70 mile round trip. When out and about, I used to keep the tank topped with Shell V-Power 98 RON when passing. On one occasion, when I had the Ferrari, I even made a special journey over there just to fill the tank (that was my excuse anyway!) [;)] Problem was, by the time I got home it needed filling once again.
But my Shell station has now changed to BP - 97 RON Ultimate is a perfectly good fuel - it's just that I don't have any BP cards. Then a couple of things happened. My local filling station in the village changed brands from Texaco to Esso and Esso started selling its Synergy Supreme 99 RON. This persuaded me to take advantage of the Esso fuel card being offered to Club members.
It's a simple process of applying online and it takes a few days to set up, but once you receive your card, you can start using it right away. The advantage to me is I no longer have to save all those annoying little till receipts, but I still receive regular invoices for me to check plus a monthly statement, all online, from the card company. When i arrive at the forecourt all I do is offer the fuel card in the normal way, put in my pin and charge the fuel to my account - no cash needed. Best of all, I receive a discount on every litre I buy, so over the course of a year this mounts up to be quite a saving.
If you've not yet thought about Esso fuel or a Club fuel card, it may be worth your consideration. I've been using mine for about 6 months now and find it is all working extremely well.
Regards,
Clive

Just received mine a couple of weeks ago - seems to work well and saves me more than the discounts I got when using the Shell rewards scheme. Probably makes little difference but the sticker on my car says it is best with at least 98 Ron fuel and my local BP is only 97 Ron so the Mobil 99 suits.

4 weeks after receiving the card so far my experience has not been great. For the first 3 weeks I was not being sent invoices, no one told me at the outset that there was an online portal to log into so I only got the log in for that in week 4 when the rep dropped it into convesation. I bought fuel on a Saturday and this didn't appear on the statement for the correct week due to transaction processing times (seems a bit of a 20th century excuse that one!) so I personally feel I DO have to keep the receipts and tally them up more diligently than before. Then this week there was a problem with the direct debit so I called and gave them a one off payment then they took the wrong amount and same day re-took the direct debit so I'm out of pocket 100% more than I spent on the card last week currently. Yesterday the credit control team only had one person logged into the phone system so I couldn't get through to talk about a refund and it's looking like that's going to take at least a week (because they process refunds once a week on a Friday apparently). I'm seriously considering jacking it in for the sake of a few pence which I can probably save anyhow if I buy fuel at the right places. For my money I'd rather pay by credit card as I always have done and get the discount at the till on production of a valid PCGB membership.

Now members can apply for an exclusive Porsche Club GB Esso Card™ fuel card (normally £36 per card, per year), which allows you to receive a discount off pump prices for all Esso Synergy fuels.

Is it free to members, or is there a discounted annual cost?

As a stereotypical Scotsman, if it is free, I would apply for one, but not if there is a charge.

Card is free
1 p off normal fuel,2 p off premium stuff
but for summer 8-10 weeks it’s 2 p off normal and 5 p off premium ( or whatever the high octanes called)
except for Scotland ??( kidding)

BTW - Esso Synergy Supreme 99 RON contains no ethanol (except in the West Country for some reason [8|]).

Clive

The area covered by exceptions is quite extensive, including the three largest counties in England as well as Scotland and Wales!........... https://www.esso.co.uk/en-gb/fuels/petrol "Although our pumps have E5 labels on them, our Synergy Supreme+ 99 is actually ethanol free (except, due to technical supply reasons, in Devon, Cornwall, North Wales, North England and Scotland)"

Just had mine come in for myself and the wife.
Quick and easy to setup and looking forward to seeing the savings.

had mine a couple of years - generally good but a couple of lessons learned...

The card is "magnetically" fragile - had one that just died and couldn't be read - and also one particular till in local station seems to be more sensitive than the others, and it often takes several goes at reading.

A few times the system was down or was failing to respond - no sensible messages - just "card didn't go through" - if at that point you pay with a regular debit/card then you can't get your discount later on, so you have to ask the station to give you a "no means to pay" form which is then processed down the line - in those few cases I have forgotten about the discount and just paid by debit card or apple pay ( so make sure you have alternative means of payment available ).

Also - you can't use it in the esso "pay at the pump app" nor at the "pay at the pump forecourt payment facilities" since it not a chip and pin device - just a mag stripe.

But when it works I get a quid or so off a fill up , I use esso anyway and as others have said - they often up the discount as a promotion, plus it's not linked to a particular reg number, so I use it for the daily as well. I was chatting to someone at a regional meeting recently who is a part time mini cab driver - the firm he works for provide the cars but the drivers pay for the fuel used..... so he uses his card for that as well and sees a noticeable benefit.

The back office piece of it all does seem a bit 1990's in its processing and support setup - down to the courtesy call a month after getting it to see "how I was getting on with the card and did i have any questions" - it's not exactly complicated

Right now the discounts are:

From the 1st September until 31st December you will save:
  • Save 6p on every single litre of Esso Synergy Supreme+99 unleaded fuel.
  • Save 6p on every single litre of Esso Synergy Supreme+ Diesel.
  • Save 1p on every single litre of Esso Synergy Regular fuels (diesel and unleaded).

Still a lot more expensive than Tesco super 99

personal choice. I imagine there are other even cheaper options

For me. i believe that super market fuels don’t have the same level of detergents and the lowest possible ethanol values I think that matters in the long term more than ron value.

for sure i would happily fill up with anything that the car can run on vs getting the bus home but generally I choose premium branda and esso in particular because of 0 ethanol and the station at the end of my road.

so if I can get what I want a Bit cheaper I will, but like I said. Personal choice.

6p a litre discount sounds good, but my local Esso super is now 1.60 per litre, I make that £7.26 per gal ??Local Texaco super is 1.55 per litre, so still only 1p per litre saving. But the best thing with Texaco is the dedicated petrol only pump which saves standing in the diesel spill and getting carpets dirty. Or am I being over fussy ?
