944 Turbo Cup

Chris,

Paul will remember, in June 2016 we went over to a Cup Car meet on a very damp day on an airfield in Aachen. Paul took Kermit and there were maybe eight 944 Turbo Cup cars. I don't have any pictures of the 944s but numerous of the 911s.

There have been several popping up on auction sites, a couple at the auction held at the last Silverstone Classic event.

The engine is an M44/52 with the K26/8 Turbo.
The build sheet gives M44/51 but with an M44/52 47J0**** engine number.
The place where an M44/51 engine number should be is simply not there (on the block).
The place where the M44/52 engine number should be is there ... but it shows only want you see.
Could RC stand for Rennsport Cup ?
I did own a 996GT3R which had no engine number but was verified to have the original crankcases ...
I have read that the M44/51 had forged conn-rods where the M44/52 did not ... hence the early engines are preferred for 400bhp tuning jobs ...
This car was in the last four vin numbers and at 400Km when bought from Porsche was described by Porsche as having been run as a Blaupunkt video car driven by Hans Stuck at the opening of the 1988 Cup season + ? ... and still having part of the original livery showing. Maybe Porsche did something special ?
Maybe only Porsche know ? !

Just uncovered the original importation document to Italy (at 400Km) dated 22.05.89 and this shows the Engine number as RC / A944 ... so we have our answer. Something special straight out of Porsche ....

Thanks Ralph :)

It gets even better ... the family to whom Porsche supplied it later competed in a 964 3.8RSR that they campaigned in 1997, winning the Monza 1000k / Misano 12 hours / Vallelunga 6 hours ... 3 out of the 18 international endurance races won by Porsche in that year.
Via a dealer ... the car came from this family to myself ... the 944 Cup then being used as a road car by Maurizio Monforte, so a three owner car ... Porsche / Monforte / Me.
