993 Turbo - Crankcase Oil Filter

I think most 993 Turbo owners are aware that the correct Porsche crankcase oil filter (the smaller filter) for the turbo is required which has a back flow valve incorporated into it. I am very careful to get the correct filter and the filter used for my last oil change 3 months ago did not look correct. I queried it but was assured it was correct by my OPC. Unfortunately it was not correct and I have had oil back flow issues in winter storage.

The correct Porsche code for a 993 Turbo Crankcase Oil Filter is 99310720304. This code was not active when my oil change was done 3 months ago. I understand this code is now active but I have not been able to find any OPC that has stock and it seems it may take 4 weeks to get stock. I have now managed to get hold of an old stock filter but that was not easy.

Just take care if you have a service booked for a 993 turbo in the next few weeks that the correct crankcase oil filter is available from Porsche and will be fitted to your car. The better approach maybe just to wait until this mix up with filter codes is resolved and stock of the correct filter is again available.

I have a 993 107 203 03 crankcase oil filter should anyone need one. Original Porsche part in factory box and made in the US of A.

The issue goes back many years and the rule was always fit a Porsche branded small crankcase filter. However what is new is it seems right now that Porsche has issues with the turbo crankcase oil filter and it may be some weeks before this is resolved and be in a position to supply the correct filter.

And even the Porsche branded filter is not immune to kack-handed fitting. A well known Porsche specialist very near to J20 installed one of those 03 filters on my 993tt but overtightened it to the point of damaging the metal flap that acts as the one way valve.

I have a 98 turbo that has full OPC from new. I do have a problem that if the car stands for a period lots of smoke, this does clear after a while though HIGHLY embarrassing. Could this be related to this filter.

The USA filters are Mann, when they were German they were Knetch, the small one for the turbo was a Knecht version 4 years or so ago as you can see from the Rennlist post. Looks like they stopped it, then reintroduced it, although as you say its not available as its in "development", which suggests they have never had a version with the check valve in it since they went Mann about 8 ish years ago!

Best bet is just to fit the Knetch filters that we have all been using for years

It could be any number of things - the choice of oil filter, the weight of the oil and/or the mileage on the car.

Can you tie the advent of smoking on start-up to a particular oil change/service?
How many miles on the car?
What oil is being used?
Can you find a part number on the receipt for the oil filters that were used at the last service?

Hi. The car has now covered about 21,000 miles always serviced Porsche main dealer every year. I seem to recall that it started about 4 years or so ago after a service(OPC). Where would I look for the filter in the car and what number should there be on it? I have been told that there is a modification that can be fitted to these cars to stop this happening. Though this modification is not to the filter.

Four years ties in with my theory on the filters being changed by Porsche and them getting it wrong!

Check valves kits are available from the USA easily enough, I wouldnt worry o much about it if you drive it so little, I would wait until Porsche get the old filter spec back into stock and change the filter, this maybe 2 or 3 months away though or pop on a Knetch one for the time being.

You say you sourced a Porsche filter ending 04, unfortunately I dont think that will be a "good" filter.

These are now available from OPC, they are a Mann filter, made in Austria, no PORSCHE logo on at all.
