I've just come across this product from J&J safeguard. I'm wondering if anyone has used this or similar/alternate products? I'm interested to hear your thoughts.

Always thought some form of knock sensing is sensible on a modded turbo - was planning something along these lines Knocklink G4 Knock light | Matrix Garage with a separate knock sensor - I think there is a 2nd casting on the turbo head that can be tapped to take it, that should detect knock even if the original sensor failed in some way - something that automatically pulls the timing makes sense too - and after a quick look at your suggestion ( which I hadn't seen before), it appears that is what it does.
cheers
Tony

Hi all

Vitesse does a great knock monitoring system.. something that I keep meaning to add... I know that I go on about Vitesse but IMHO there is none better... Their V-knock, when used with their excellent V-MAF +, will automatically adjust both fuel and ignition to counter knock and works in unison with the KLR.
Vitesse have added to this with their Mo-Monitor which can datalog everything that's going on in your engine... I copy/pasted the details below
  • RPM
  • Injector Duty Cycle
  • Ignition Timing
  • Manifold Pressure
  • O2 Sensor
  • Throttle Position
  • VAF/MAF Input
  • Engine Load
  • Knock indicator
  • Water Temp
  • VAF Air Temp
  • Intake Temp
  • Battery Voltage
  • Calculated Horsepower and Torque
  • A/C On/Off
  • Fuel Quality Switch (FQS) position
  • Impedance Adapter
  • Performance Plug
  • MotronicDisplay_tn.jpg
(this small image will display if you open it in a new tab)
  • I guess I should add these to my shopping list...:)

Interesting to learn about the other products. Jon at JMG first made me aware of J&J Safeguard.

Pete, I've got the Vitesse MAF and piggy back fuel tuner on my turbo. This was probably installed 6/7/8 years ago by JMG. Do you know if the equipment can be retro fitted to the existing set up or would I need to swap out the old kit for the new kit entirely?

I would think the knock detector would be the same for both the V-MAF which I first fitted back in 2007/8 and the newer V-MAF+ which I upgraded to 6 years ago.
Not sure about the newer Mo-Monitor, although it does come with its own chip board so possible? A quick email to John should answer your question.

I think the S2 and 2.7 blocks have 2 knock sensor mountings on the block, though only 1 may be used. I have read noises unrelated to detonation can trigger some knock sensors though. And I believe most standalone setups have the facility to pull timing when knock is detected. The cost to repair the 30+ year old DME and KLR is similar to the price of entry level VEMS etc.

I thought the 16v engines ran with 2 but it is along time since I was looking at it so could be very wrong!

The 2.7 block I've have has 2 tapped holes for knock sensors, but the single year 2.7 engine is a mystery. Were Porsche using 2.7 owners to durability trial the block for the S2, or was it for a still born updated 8V turbo engine?

My 88 Twbo block is tapped for two as well - unless one is a mount for the cycling valve I removed or similar.

Pretty sure I've read Jon Mitchell saying that the 2.7 and the 944 S 2.5 16v were both test benches for the 3.0 S2 engine.

I wouldn't give garage space to any of them TBH.
