944s and 944S2 exhaust front and rear box

Hi
I'm pretty sure that the 944S and 944S2 exhaust fitment are the same part numbers and are interchangeable, so when my present 944S front(middle) box failed as the baffles rattled really bad so it was time to replace it

With that I've sourced a Rear Dansk off a 944S2 but have struggled to get the "front/middle box" for a 944s / 944S2 16v versions, importantly here the 944 8v versions are easy to get hold of but not the front/middle box for 944S and S2 16 valves versions and so proved difficult to get.

Eventually, I sourced and purchased a middle stainless box from Design911 thought I done my homework and went to fit this middle box to my 944S and the new middle box doesn't align parallel with the torque tuble when it's connected to the downpipe it's either angled downwards about 15 degrees or rotated 180 degrees up against the floor pan..... Design911 have been helpful and are 100% sure its the right part for the 944S too!

So, hopefully here I may get an answer with someone that's already been in the place I'm in now and may have an idea why there's fitment issues for 944s and 944S2 having identical part numbers that don't actually fit or have I got...
1) got non standard manifolds/down pipes causing it not to align correctly to the downpipe's or
2) infact the middle box is wrongly constructed from Design911.

Hope it makes sense looking forward to any suggestions why ?

John

I can’t say with any certainty what the exhaust fitment situation is. But I can say with certainty that my dealings with Design911’s technical support department made me double check I’d not accidentally phoned a Clown School.

:ROFLMAO:this made me laugh !

i can’t speak for there tech department and i wouldnt judge anything i don’t have experience with, just came as a shock as when i went down there to pick up some bits for my 986 S they seemed very professional and genuine, and the place was very impressive with some old porsches and open engines on display next to the till ect, ...... but selling parts and giving technical info and advice are two different things! as i also know too well when asking questions that i espect companies to know more than me!

Thanks guys, yes your comments made me chuckle too but I had to be impartial as I haven't dealt with Design911 before.

Yes, I've checked the PET listing myself and the front box Part No 944 11 985 02 for a 944S (M44.40 2.5ltr 16v) is the same for the S2 (M44.41 3Ltr 16v) too.
My issue is that I acquired the with a complete stainless exhaust with no joint its completely one piece all welded from the down pipe to the exit pipe.
So, with the front box knackered I've have to go with a 2 part fitment again and the front boxes are as rare as hens teeth for the 16valve versions so this Design911 being available I got it but it just doesn't fit so hence my post for help:
It may well be 2 things:
1) yep Design911 supplied the wrong part or
2) as my 944S has been tinkered with prior to me it may have aftermarket manifolds and Y piece down pipe which is non standard? I'll post a picture of it soon showing it

Just ditch the centre silencer completely and get any competent exhaust shop to weld a straight bit of pipe in instead. I did this on my old N/A and it sounded far better.

Thanks Eldavo your suggestion the present exhaust is pretty noisy anyway, being an old fart I going a little bit quieter hopefully with a Dansk rear box to what's fitted already!

the exhaust is still available form Porsche for the M44 40 engine, but its a horrifying £1042.00 Inc Vat for the front box, and the rear box is a paltry £900. what are Porsche thinking with these prices

Well I'm guessing the exhaust is original so it lasted 33 years! worth it when you look at it that way [:D]

Hi John,

I had exactly this issue 10 years ago with a decat pipe supplied by Design911:

ACtC-3dqe77-gJA1JoDHbrcxS8t0vl2GU8ExR8BJI926blBO7n6MtehOcUJCuzarAfvAZ3r1SA-a7w9GzGUuu-wk1wiF7uBVJLvrvskE5CN4u2u2rUEtiXhxsaivDlXTjRqiwxoGMTIYE0IRey1jKBm9pSuppg=w1000-no-tmp.jpg

The guys at JMG Garage could not make it fit my '91 S2. After a bit of toing and froing, I got my money back.

Cheers,

Jim

Nope DL Knight at some stage has had a whole stainless large bore fitted front to back with back all welded no joints, so with the middle box shot it not an easy replacement replacing the middle box as its welded in.

Hi Hotblack.....That's the part number I've been sent along with the description too, perhaps I've got your one supplied 10yrs on sent to me !
So its time for a return to Design911 me thinks and a bit of fabrication works now.

Thanks

John

I just went to a stainless steel exhaust specialist and they made a complete system for me for approx £400, much easier and they design it to your spec including the exhaust note.

Hi Jase
Yes that my next stage luckily have someone local who specialize in stainless exhausts builds, sadly as with all these jobs we undertake, source and get a middle box then fit myself and job done...not!

Just bought a new Dansk rear box inc pipe to centre silencer for my wife's 924S from ECP-mirror polish finish ,totally non magnetic ( suggests 316 grade) for £191 inc VAT
Don't know whether it would fit your car.

Incidentally a great old school friend of mine lives in Gt Missenden in the new house next door to the Liberty house-Leon Metcalfe -probably still has his 928 metallic light blue. Do U know him at all?

Right got the old girl back on the road, so a new fabricated stainless front box fitted and replaced the old oversized bore rear system with a quieter Dansk, what a difference I'm no-longer a noisey lad on the roads now:rolleyes:.

Have to say has resolved some engine fumes issues I had for a while, as the old rear box had quite a few tiny perforated holes on the top of the rear box this just couldn't be seen from below and the exit pipe was slightly too short and wasn't long enough to exiting gases into clean air as it wasn't passing beyond the rear bumper so what appears to be happening the exit exhaust fumes where getting stuck in the "dead air void" directly behind the car when going at speed and then add the perforated box allowing fumes to get into the car via the boot somehow.
