D90 tyre size

I have D90’s on my S2 (7/55) and the fronts are cracking so need replaced

The current tyres are 225/50/16 which I’ve always felt while turning the wheel that they are bit too wide so have been looking at 205/55/16 instead.

I don’t really understand all the numbers so wanted to check if they will fit ok before ordering or if anyone has other recommendation?

Thanks.

If you have the sports chassis it is the same as the Turbo with 7.5 (offset 65mm) rims. The tyre size should be 225/50/16
If you have the standard chassis the with 7.0 (offset 55mm or 52.3mm) rims. The tyre size should be 205/50/16.

This comes from my drivers' manual pages 99 and 100.

Hope this helps.

My S2 CAB is on standard sizes as far as Im aware - they are:-
Front 205 55 16 (on 7x16 ET55)
Rear 225 50 16 (on 8 x16 ET52)

Unless it's a misprint ? your manual should say 205/55/16 NOT 205/50/16.

Front 7" 205/55/16
Rear 8" 225/50/16

He's correct, take no notice of what I put.

The new front tyres have made such a difference to the feel of the car that I’m now thinking I should have just changed the rears too but I have a problem.

I put Toyo Proxes TR1 on the front as that’s what was already there and as I was keeping the rears I thought best to keep them the same.

The rears are 245/45/16 but a quick look on blackcircles comes up with no results so as I went back to stock size on the front I’ve also looked for 225/50/16 but nothing is coming up for Toyo tyres.

Is there much of an issue having different makes on the rear?

I'm sure others will disagree, but I've mixed brands front and rear on a few cars and as long as you're sensible (i.e. no ditch finders on one end and premiums on the other) then there's no reason why it would be noticeable in normal driving (hard track use or extreme wet conditions may be different).
After all even with identical tyres you're rarely going to have exactly the same wear between front to rear, or for the matter even weight (fuel, passengers etc) and so on, so it wouldn't trouble me.

The last set of Michelins and Continentals on my 944 turbo and A4 quattro must be rare then.

It's just that Toyo don't list that size in the TR1 (225/50/16), which is probably why the previous owner went for the nearest overall circumference with the 245/45/16
but this is a tad wide really for an 8" Wide rim. A wheel width of 203.2mm is 41.8mm narrower than the tyre leaving a fair amount of slop either side of the rim.
Porsche did use a 245/45/16 on a 944 but with a 9" wide rim.

You can either stick with the same rear size as you currently have or as you suggest go for a different brand in the 225/50/16 which will not be an issue for road
use as long as you don't go for a budget ching chow yung!

One of the best (In wet braking and cornering tests) in this size is the Continental Premium contact6 (Pic below)
although they will be £100+ each, if you don't want the best and prefer a semi budget
the Avon ZV7's are good in the wet and probably about £30-£40 less each..
