Tall Driver Advice Please Guys

Hi Guys

Im a tall guy and the cockpit of the cayman currently is very cramped with the steering wheel hitting my knees, does anyone else have issues similar to mine and if so what did you do to get round the concern.

I'm 6'4" and I thought I might have trouble fitting in a cayman before I test drove one. I found it wasn't really a worry. After I bought one I did find I had to get a good stearing wheel position to fit my legs in without knocking into the wheel when using the clutch and brake. I have the seat as far back as it will go and low, then I brought the steering wheel up to its highest level and then closer in to my body and this I find is a good setup for my dimensions at least.

Like you im a tall guy 6'3" tall, I have lowered the seat down as a far as it will go, my car is a 987.1 and I find that the steering wheel still hits my legs, Im actually considering buying a flat bottom steering wheel to over come the issue, in my opinion the seats dont go low enough and not enough variation in positioning of the steering wheel, im wondering if there are seats that will go lower without being bucket race seats?.....and does anyone have an aftermarket flat bottomed steering wheel fitted to their car and if so which one?

Assuming you have got to the point where the seat position cannot be improved, then I would suggest trying the seating in a few other Caymans to see if there is an option that works better. I am only 6’ 2, but did not need the full rearward adjustment on my old Cayman R or my current GTS.

You may not gain as much from a flat bottom steering wheel as you would with seats that gave you a bit more rear travel. You should be able to get the back against the rear bulkhead. But you may have to accept a slightly more upright seating position, which would obviously drop your knees a bit.

If all else fails, a bit of time tryping as many cars as you can to see if you can find a configuration that works and you can duplicate. There are plenty of alternative seats out there but trying to measure differences, with a combination of seat and fitting system to consider, will be challenging.

Where about are you based? There may be others local l to you who can help.

I’m pretty sure that in my 987.2 the rear bulkhead is slightly angled so raising the seat will enable it to slide back further thus increasing the legroom a little, couple this with raising the steering wheel and bringing it closer to you may give you the clearance you need. I guess it depends on whether you have long legs or a long torso?

I hope that someone will correct me if I’m wrong but I think I was told that the optimum steering wheel height and reach can be found by adjusting it so that your arms are horizontal and your wrists rest on the rim - I hope I haven’t remembered that incorrectly?

Good Morning Everyone

My driving position is quite upright, and prefer my arms bent very similar to a rally driver whilst steering, someone once mentioned and I quote" its as if you are wearing your car" I will explore the seating position some more, however I might invest in one of these http://www.girol.it/porsche/ from a couple of chaps who have these im told the quality is excellent, I think this might be a better link : https://www.spacershop.com

I’m 6’3” and generally haven't had a problem for driving position in Porsche’s (although my original 986 felt a little cramped). When I got the Cayman I was directed to this video from the PEC. Only a couple of minutes but may help the OP get the correct driving position, although it may not be the one he expected. I remember following the guidance and it taking a few runs before it actually felt comfortable but now it feels normal.

No problem, as you say its from the horses mouth! TBH I wasn’t a million miles away from the seating position suggested but that last bit of adjustment left me feeling uncomfortable for a few drives until my body got used to the position.

If you said you had a 986 I would have said you may have had a problem but (87/981/718 all seem to be a little bit bigger where it counts for us taller drivers. Enjoy your car!

 
Hi Simon, I tried the seating position and yes I can live with that, I took the car out for a decent spin no issues at all with the new seating position, many thanks Simon very much appreciated, now I can get on with enjoying and restoring the car

 
Hi Nick. I had the same problem with my 987.1. On occasion my hands would bump into my legs on a fuller rotation of the wheel. Not a major issue on road driving, but it gave me a few moments on the track.

I’ve solved the problem by fitting an OMP Corsica 330mm dished wheel. It’s slightly smaller diameter than the stock Porsche and also the Momo wheel so gives plenty of clearance. The dish, plus boss, also help to bring the wheel A little nearer, which I find more comfortable.

I think the best advice I’ve seen on this thread is to try a few options before you make any major changes.

I followed the brilliant short film above, I have to say that following the advice within the film generally is quite good, however it does need some fine tuning and I am still considering a new steering wheel or spacer.
