a drive through the Black Mountains to the Gower

Morning all, hope your all safe & well. Once this lockdown is over we are planning a trip to the Gower, we want to drive through the Black Mountains. can any on the local knowledge steer us to or indeed away from any particular routes? We will be starting in Oxfordshire & crossing the Seven on the original bridge. Any help and recommendations will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance .

Hi Paul,

this is a route I was planning on trying before all the restrictions started. It doesn't go on the Black Mountain Pass (A4069) but it does go on the A4067 which is apparently excellent driving. Of course you could adapt the route by driving past Sennybridge and make for Llandovery then Llangadog. South Wales is lucky to be blessed with so many great roads that once you get away from Newport and Cardiff the scenery and driving improves.

If it`s only the `infamous` Black Mountains - A4069 - Upper Brynamman to Llangadog you want then best access would be on the return journey. You could then loop East to Sennybridge and maybe take in the military (rally routes) roads of Mynydd Epynt … then back down the A4067 and across to the bridge.

If you had the time here is a route for outbound leg … from Oxford - Hereford - Builth Wells - Newbridge on Wye - Beulah … A483 South down the Sugar Loaf to Llangadog and reverse way over the Black Mountains A4069 and on to the Gower.

I`ve not driven these roads for some twenty years, locals inform me that they are far more closely `monitored` than they used to be.

There are many more options !

no problems, as soon as they relax the restrictions I’ll be going on the route, I’ll send you some feedback - possibly even a bit of video?? where in the Gower are you aiming for or is it not decided yet?

Not the question asked - but rather than double back after the bridge I would be tempted to look at the A40 to Glos which is open and pretty road then head down A466 past Tintern OR on to Monmouth and across to Hay on Wye OR turn Hereford way and B4521 (Bell @ Skenfrith lunch), Abergavenny, Crickhowell, Brecon. Then head down several great roads to the Gower-- Some timings (start-lunch- arrival ) would help with suggestions.

Hi Paul,

now cross border travel is looking more likely, if you're still looking for a cross border route I found this excellent Top Gear article whilst researching my own routes. This one includes an excellent couple of routes from Chepstow right over to the Black Mountain Pass. Hope it's helpful - it's well worth a read.
