Thanks Ralph. Maybe that would do it.

I managed to access the join a meeting page which requested a meeting ID. I tried using the number 962014867 in the URL (just as a guess), but no joy .... I just got the Safari cannot open the page message again.!

Better luck next time maybe? How did the meeting go?

All....

We had 5 on at the peak and have just finished.

Jeff, I have asked AndrewT to post his sign on experience which might well be useful and maybe a "Sticky"

We thought the next one should be in a month's time, be a virtual Caymans & Wine event, so general chat.

As for publicising the next event, it looks like AndrewT's approach to the Caymans & Coffee consisting of an initial forum post advising of event, promptly followed up by mailchimp to all Cayman Register members, and then those who respond being posted on an attendees list on the forum.

Hopefully the next one will be hosted by the RS, but who knows...

Thanks Ralph, some guidance would be useful for next time. Apologies that I couldn’t join in the fun, but glad to hear that there was a quorum for the first meeting.

I think a forum post followed by a mailchimp would be the most sensible way of notifying Register members of the next meeting. Fingers crossed that we’ll have a new RS in place in the next few weeks.

Ralph,

Just to add a note about security, which I believe Alan mentioned in a previous post here. Unfortunately the Cayman forum is open to everybody, Guests included, so that anyone can hijack a Username and therefore get into a meeting if the Club Member has indicated on the forum that they're going to attend.

One way round this would be to make the announcement on the Cayman forum but to direct them to a parallel post on the For PCGB Club Members only forum in which those planning to attend could make it known to the host.

I presume that the PM is only open to Members, so perhaps an alternative would be for the host to PM potential attendees a password to gain entry to the meeting?

Maybe a bit OTT, but food for thought. Given the current situation I hope that the Club is looking actively into this way of keeping us all connected, and this should include maintaining security.

Jeff,

I understand the point. The issue is more about "zoom bombing" than fraud. The Club is rolling out zoom and I will use the Cayman Register account which should enable better access control.

Jeff,

To help you  for future calls the best way to guarantee success joining a Zoom meeting using Safari is as follows:

Hope this helps Mark (IT Director).
Safari
  1. Open Safari.
  2. Go to join.zoom.us.
  3. Enter your meeting ID provided by the host/organizer.
  4.  Note: Safari does not automatically load the add on sometimes and fails to load the meeting.

Jeff,
Ralph asked me during the Zoom conference last night if I would mind documenting my experience in accessing the meeting which was my first attempt at using Zoom. I’ll do that below, but first I’d suggest that anyone trying to join a Zoom conference ought to follow the steps indicated in the previous post by Mark the IT Director.

I have to say that I faffed around a bit in trying to join the conference and didn’t keep a detailed and precise record of the steps I took but it went something like this.......

I was using an iPad Mini 4 running OS 13.3.1 and my default browser which is Firefox Version 24.1.

I had the PCGB forum thread open in Firefox and on clicking the url link which Ralph had posted I got a message similar to Jeff’s saying something like  “cannot open link”. Along with that message I was given the option to Cancel or download the Zoom app. Initially I chose to Cancel and clicked on the link again with the same result of course, this time instead of Cancelling I elected to download the Zoom app.

On opening the Zoom app I believe I had the option to sign in or register. Not wishing to register I closed the app and returned to Firefox where I clicked on the link provided by Ralph, this again launched the Zoom app with the option to sign in or register but this time instead of cancelling I did something which presented me with a list of phone numbers to dial in to. That didn’t seem right to me so I closed the app again and went back to Ralph’s link. Repeating my previous actions I ignored the list of phone numbers and I believe I saw a ‘join’ option which enabled me to join the Cayman Register meeting. The meeting then opened up and it was just a matter of me tapping the iPad screen to bring up a menu at the top of the screen where I could switch on the camera and microphone.

There you go, clear as mud.

I enjoyed the meeting, it was good to be able to add faces to those people I’ve ‘seen’ on the forum. Not only that, it’s the first ever PCGB meeting I’ve attended while wearing my slippers!

Mark, Andrew,

Many thanks chaps.

Mark, ref my post #21 above, that's exactly what I tried to do using Safari. Unfortunately I didn't have the meeting ID, and my guess at using the 9-figure number in Ralph's URL didn't work. Perhaps it would be useful if Ralph (or whoever) made this known to potential participants in advance of the meeting.

Andrew, I'll give your useful guide a shot for the May meeting ... many thanks for that. It's always difficult to recall exactly what you did to get things working when you're faffing around opening different windows and clicking 'buttons' at random.!

I would have persevered a bit longer but was diverted by a FaceTime call from a family member (and her young daughters!), after which I guessed that the meeting probably had ended.

Hopefully catch-up with you all next time. Like you, I was looking forward to putting faces to some forum contributors.
