MOT expiry dates extended by 6 months

Couldn't travel to get my Boxster MOT'd.
(My received advice was that you can only travel to get a car service/MOT if you are a key worker who requires the car for work. Or I guess need it to do essential basic shopping. Fair enough, I do have other cars)

So was intending SORN'ing it.

But then saw today's announcement ...

"From 30 March 2020, MOT due dates for cars, motorcycles and light vans will be extended by 6 months. This is being done to help prevent the spread of coronavirus."

Good!

Yes, good news Richard. However, ATM you can't tax your vehicle unless you have valid insurance and an MOT.

I assume that if your current MOT is just being extended then it's still valid, but additional guidance is required there from the Government. The car tax online application site is going to have to be revamped pretty quickly to cope with any changes from 30th March.

Mots on vehicles with an expiry on March 30 onwards will have their expiry dates extended by 6 months in batches on a weekly basis until further notice. So, this week, cars with the Mot due to expire 30th March to 5th April will be extended. Next week they move onto the next batch.
You will be able to check the new expiry date in the usual manner on gov.co.uk
If your Mot has already expired, you still have to get it tested.

It makes sense but, like most of these announcements, should have been made a month earlier when it was obvious what was going to happen. And why only expiry dates from 30th when we went into lockdown on 23rd?
