Turbo Charging a 3.2 engine

Have been a member her for a few years but never really used the forum much. I am bringing back to life a 1986 Carrera and am interested in fitting a turbo to the engine. Has anyone on here previous experience in doing this. Should we rebuild engine into a 3.4 first or is it best to keep it at 3.2? Any kits available or a parts list of recommended.
 
Sounds like an ambitious but interesting project. Unless you really know what you’re doing maybe look up the original specs for the 3.2 Turbo and start from there. The compression ratio would be lower for starter, probably used shorter pistons. You’ll certainly need to rebuild the engine to take the extra power. Let us know how it goes, best of luck!
 
You also need to think about the gearbox. Being an 86 car does it have the 915 or G50 gearbox? The turbo used both, but, the 915 was heavily revised to a 4 speed to cope with the torque. Not sure if an changes were made to the G50 though.
 
If you’re after an off the shelf conversion solution, it may be worth pursuing the supercharged route which seems quite well travelled, especially in the USA.
Alternatively, make it simple and replace the 3.2 engine with a 3.3 turbo engine and all the trimmings - there have been a few for sale recently.
 
Has the 915 box in it but thought the box could take 350BHP plus which is what I'm after. Obviously we will rebuild it to make sure its ok.
 
May have a look at the supercharge route but would rather keep the same engine in it to keep the 'originality'.

Once you've modified the engine, either by going 3.4 or turbo/super-charging it, originality sort of goes out the window.

These are expensive engines to get more power out of. A "proper" 3.4 conversion is unlikely to leave you with much change from £15K and might even leave you in debt.

IMHO if you want a turbocharged 80s-era 911 buy a 930. Adding a turbo to a 3.2 is going to be expensive and time consuming and is far from a plug and play change.

£15k and the rest.........................

Large single turbos will suffer from Turbo Lag, it does make enthusiastic driving (like all 930's) a unique experience!

You'll need to look to the US for inspiration and kits for Turbo and Supercharging, dare I say it not a UK or European thing on IB's.

Have you though about going the RSR route! or the chepest bang for buck is throwing a 3.6 into the back.......
