Driving in Scottish Highlands

All,

I plan to return to Scotland and its beautiful roads in the remote Highlands - my last trip was in my family car (which runs on RON95 unleaded petrol).

My next visit will be in my 997S which I run this on Shell VPower (or at a push Tesco Momentum 99).

The North Coast 500 route has a lack of petrol retailers in the area. In addition to this, the ones that I can see only sell RON95 unleaded (and diesel)....

What can (or could) be done to boost the octane from say 95 to 98? Does anyone have any experience or give any input on this topic please?

Many thanks jp

When I toured the Scottish Highlands last year I generally followed the advice of a local, Brian Innes, by topping up with fuel whenever I saw a filling station. By doing that I only had to put 95 RON fuel in once and that was in Poolewe, even then it only took about half a tank to top it up.

I fill up at the last Shell to the North of Glasgow, by the airport (Kincardine?) and then once I got further north I looked out for Gleaner stations that do 97. There’s one at Fort William - Nevis Filling Station? - and a couple of others in the area that you can find with an internet search.

Enjoy the drive!

Gareth
