Driving Routes

Hello there.
As soon as the weather looks a bit less threatening we’d like to take a few days and enjoy some of North Wales’ best driving roads.
Is there a collection of R6’s recommendations that is available to members please?

Evo triangle - fantastic route and a regular for us. 50mph restriction and average speed cameras are recent additions which somewhat spoil the fun. Still a nice drive but be very careful. We have a zero tolerance on speeding in North Wales.

The 3 best passes in North Wales are:
  • Llanberris - A4086 from Capel Curig to Caernarfon
  • Aber Glaslyn - A4085 from Caernarfon to Beddgelert
  • Nant Francon - A5 from Bethesda to Capel Curig
Other excellent roads include:
  • A470 from Llandudno all the way through to Dolgellau
  • A494 from Dolgellau up to Bala and beyond
  • Anglesey has some excellent roads and restaurants

Places worth a visit:
  • Portmeirion - Italiante village where The Prisoner was filmed - free entry if you book lunch
  • Zip World in Bethesda - longest zip in Europe - good for a coffee stop and watching the zippers
  • Bodnant gardens - National Trust
  • Betwys y Coed - decent sized place with craft / tourist shops
  • Rhug Bison Farm on A5 near Corwen - good coffee or lunch stop
  • Llandudno - prom is lovely. Lots to do in the town if you want a break from driving
Places to stay - not sure of your budget so here's a mix
  • Waterloo Hotel in Betws y Coed
  • Riverside Hotel in Betws y Coed
  • The Quays Hotel in Deganwy
  • Tyn y Coed Hotel in Capel Curig
  • Sportsmans in Porthmadog - good location but some rooms are a bit jaded
  • Bodysgallen Hall - lovely but pricey
I hope that gets you started. Please shout if you need more info or any help with things.

Sue, that's brilliant.
Thank you very much.
I've invested in a Drivesmart speed camera locator which I'll be sure to update before I make the trip - looking forward to it already.
Thanks again
