Spark Plug Tube oil leak Later 996

Spark Plug Tube 996 series
On the early 996 there is a tube which slides down the spark plug hole to keep the oil out it has a O Ring at the top and bottom which can easily be replaced

Later 996 (Probably .2) has done away with the tube and replaced it with a Rubber "Gasket" which fits on the bottom of the Rocker Cover on each plug "Hole" and an O ring at the top.

Does anybody know if the Rocker cover can be removed without removing the engine

THis is the same on the 997 Boxster which has the problem but nobody on the Boxster Forum seems to know

What's a "rocker cover"? [8|][8|]

To remove the cam cover you need a set of special tools to clamp the cams and lock them. The cam cover forms the top half of the camshaft bearing cap, so if you remove the cover the cams are unsupported.

I have a feeling it might be possible, but not entirely sure. Why don't you contact the Boxster Register Technical Adviser, Steve Winter at JAZ Porsche. If anyone knows, I am sure he will.

Just wish you where on Boxster as well there does not seem to be anyone on there with your skills and knowledge

Silly question I presume you have to remove the cam cover to apply the tool

Surely al I am going to do is to change the inner gasket at put the cover back on.

It will probably be quicker than apply the tool

I think one of the tools holds the cams in place while you remove the cover. The cover is sealed with a silicone compound,plus the 'O' rings for the spark plug recesses. You are really best speaking with someone who has actually done it.

Hopefully Tony (wibble) will pick up on this, as he did a complete rebuild on his engine, albeit a 996.1.
 
I had to think twice, but yes you will need a lock the cams whilst cover is removed.

As to working in-situ then I believe it is possible to work on top end, but very restricted. You would need to get the car on ramps and remove rear wheels. You can lower the engine a view inches to get vital space, but be careful with hydraulic hoses, air-con etc. I remember at talk at Cornbury House on the 996 and vaguely remember technicians saying work could be done on heads without engine out.

I wouldn't say its complicated but just take your time. You would also need to unplug the variocam solenoid too. As Richard said you will need to buy the silicone from Porsche to reseal cam cover, possibly a new solenoid cover too.
