987.1 Boxster (2007) 2.7 manual 100 k miles

Oil on outside of Spark Plug/ Thread when removed

Note this is not the tube that is on the coil pack
986/996 Engines have a Spark Plug Tube for each Plug which has a o Ring top and bottom You can remove this Tube from the cam cover and replace the 2 0 ring types for about 20.00 UKP total.Easy Job
Tube are more expensive but only need replacing if damaged

987 and 997 (.1) engines have done away with the tubes and have an 0 Ring (999 701 761 41) on top of the Cam Cover and one on the underneath
My question is
Can you get at the O rings under the cover without removing the coverCan you remove the cover without removing the engine

Another update from Porsche that make the job lore difficult
I have Oil in one of my plugs

THANKS[/LIST]

Richard,

Looking at the PET for your 987.1 I see what you mean about the seal on the underside and O-ring on the upper. I would guess that you'd need to remove the cover to get to the underside seal but can't say whether or not the engine would have to be removed; it depends upon the space between the engine and chassis. Even if it's not possible to remove the cover completely with the engine in-situ there may be sufficient space to access the inner seal.

I note that the arrangement on my 987.2 is entirely different, with a single gasket providing the seal between the head and cam cover.

Its got the same set up on later 996.2 cars!!
The tube was obviously a problem.
Its actually called a Gasket on PET.
Will have to give it a go.
I am not able to work under cars since having my knees replaced (Part no 997 221 999 00!!!) so rely on my son in law
I really enjoyed working on cars

Having re built a urquattro many years ago

It really is a much better engine - but you would still have to remove the cam cover to get at the gasket.

And I am told you need tha cam locking tool but I cannot see why as all I am going to do remove the cover and replace the Gasket/O Rings and put it back on
Need to look if you lock the cam BEFORE you remove the cover.

Sounds like a lot of complication Richard - probably best left to a specialist if special tools are required.

I see that Richard Hamilton on the 996 forum has suggested that you contact Steve Winter at JAZ Porsche, which sounds like a good call since he'll have rebuilt quite a few 986 and 987 engines.
