I recently took delivery of a new 2019 Macan S petrol and noticed that the indicated oil pressure at idling appeared low e.g. 1.4 bar with a cold engine. This oil pressure remained close to 1.4-1.5 bar when the engine oil was hot (95 Deg C) @ approx 2000 RPM. There were no fault indications therefore I returned the vehicle to my local Porsche dealership (Bournemouth) for their comment. Several other new Macan V6 engined Macans were checked at the dealership and their oil pressures were identical to my experience. I could not get any explanation from the dealership and was given the number of the Porsche Customer Assistance Centre in Reading. They could not give me an instant response but did contact me next day to state that their senior Technician stated that the oil pressure on this type of engine is monitored and controlled by an electronic control called the DME, therefore the oil pressure is increased as the load on the engine increases, and is not only influenced by oil temp and engine revs alone.
As an engineer I find this control methodology very interesting and I asked if further clarification could be obtained that I could share with the Register. Their reply was this information is confidential to Porsche AG and could not be divulged!
Has other Macan owners observed this and can anyone throw further light on this control mechanism? I would be very interested in understanding how the oil pump can increase pressure electronically (unless it is electrically driven) ?
