Targa roof issues?

I'm considering buying a 993 Targa for touring. Does anyone have any observations on how the 993 sliding roof compares with the earlier "foldable" versions in terms of wind noise and leaks?
Thanks

Hi Andy
Had mine 16 years this month
I've had the front seal replaced due to age by a specialist and I've changed a couple of the easier other rubbers due to age
I've never had any leaks but depending on weather temp you can get a little wind noise but normally if its dry my roof is always open
There is a clip that can break on the sun blind but never had any issues.
The Targa is on a Cab chassis and does twist compared to a Coupe
I do have pdf's from Porsche with wind noise and water leak fixes/prevention
Before I use to have Targa SC and stopping to get the roof out when it rained was a pain and the space it took up to and sometimes leaked and had wind noise. The 993 Targa just a press of the button and it's not governed by speed either
Hope that helps
Graham

Graham - I'd be grateful for a copy of the PDFs if you can. I've fumbled my way around fixing most things on the roof, but it would be good to have the right reference material as I still have a few niggles (mainly wind noise at a particular speed).

Andy,

I've had mine for 10+ years and for most of that it was a commuter car and used on the occasional long journey, rather than touring. It's now a garage queen, unfortunately.

The roof is fantastic if it's set up right, and very convenient. Mine has had a few issues, though, including: badly adjusted worm drives, worn parts, poorly adjusted fitting leading to wind noise, and leaks. It sounds bad, but to be fair most are straightforward to address. I do need to stay on top of it though, as it seems to drift out of adjustment fairly regularly (hitting a pothole seems to do it!).

The positives far outweigh the negatives, for me, but make sure the air conditioning is working as they can get warm.

...and I forgot to add - check that the roller blind is working as it really helps to keep the cabin cool.

Make sure you fully extend and retract it several times to see if it runs smoothly in its tracks and doesn't pop out or have any issues. Mine wasn't great when I bought it. The whole blind would jump out of place every now and then when I used it, which was irritating! I replaced a couple of cheap bits that were worn (small guides that go into the end of the blind and run in the tracks, from memory). It was an easy job and it's been perfect ever since.

Cheers/John

Hi Andy,
I've owned my Targa since 2012, used as a daily driver initially but in garage for last couple. The roof is brilliant, I've had convertibles and sunroofs in all my cars, an essential option and the Targa was way ahead of it's time and even now provides more light than a pano roof (I also have a Macan with Pano). This year I decided it was time for a full revamp as there was some signs of rust at the top of A frame so I've dismantaled the Targa roof, and stripped the car down ready for respray. The main issue is that the guide wires that run the roof can't be replaced without removing the roof. You can repair the wind deflector in situ, mine had one side that wasn't raising correctly. I never had any leak issues so can't really comment on this, and haven't had earlier targas (apart from a gen 1 Toyota MR2 T Bar which had removable panels and even the Japanese engineers in the 19990's couldn't solve leaks!). The Targa is vastly underated, unless you really want to track a car of this vintage....

Thanks for that. I was flip flopping around too many tempting choices and finally decided to hang onto my 964 Targa for the moment... wind noise and all but very hard to beat on the right day, and dive back into earlier 911 history.
So I've bought a 1987 LHD Carrera, quite heavily modified mechanically... 993 tweaked engine, LSD, modded suspension, 7/9" x 16" Fuchs and 4 pot Boxster brakes, but original interior and tatty body with a view to doing a backdate to a pre '74 car. All on hold currently for the obvious reason.
The car provides a very interesting comparison to the 964. Much "tighter" and quicker (mostly weight saving) so great when pushing along, but I've found it hard (so far) to enjoy a relaxing cruise in it as it's so much more demanding of your constant attention.
