Hi

Can anyone help. Just going to fill up my 996 C4 2000 with fuel for the Yorkshire Porsche Festival tomorrow and it won’t open with the key!!!!

Not driven it for two weeks. I understand that the key fob goes dormant but it won’t even open with the key.

Any suggestions?

Hi David
When was the last time you knew the lock worked with the key? Looks to me like you have two issues; one the central locking has gone into sleep mode and two a possible issue of a broken door lock. The key moves a rod to unlock the mechanism, this rod is known to break see link below.. I’m not 100% sure how to awaken the central locking so you can use the key fob, If you can gain access to the front boot (Google emergency release cable) if you disconnect a battery terminal and reconnect that may do it (beware the Alarm will go off) or you could try getting into the car via the inner door pull not sure if your breakdown cover may assist you.

Good luck

Thanks Andy.

Everything worked fine two weeks ago. The key fob normally goes into sleep mode after 7 days and I just open using the key. Looks as though the central locking has gone into sleep mode and also the battery has gone dead (possible accelerated by leaving a usb phone charger connected?). This may be why the key won’t work? With help from a friend and fellow Porsche Club member tonight we have managed to remove the offside inner wheel arch cover and pull the cable to release the front bonnet. Not a simple task as couldn’t remove the tyre due to the wheel locking nut being inside the car. Alarm went off and now charging the battery to see if this will enable the key to work so I can open the door. Wish me luck! It might be an early start tomorrow to try and fix so we can drive to the Yorkshire Porsche Festival.

I’m sorry to read of what must have been extremely frustrating problems. I hope everything returns to normal with a charged battery and that you make it to Lotherton for a relaxing day at the Yorkshire Porsche Festival.
Best wishes
Roger

Thanks Roger.

Fingers crossed. Will see what the Porsche gods have waiting for me in the morning after an overnight charge. See you at Lotherton....

Battery Charged overnight which has worked and doors opened!!!

Thanks all for advice and support especially Phil Beecroft for sacrificing his Saturday evening to help.

This caught me out a few times when I first bought mine. Another way is to open the engine cover and use the positive jump post (+) and earth with a portable power unit. This will give you entry with the remote key. Then ensure your fob remaps the alarm in the ignition. A new car battery should alleviate a dead circuit, plus trickle charge over long periods of no use.

How was the Yorkshire Festival? I must do this event.

Thanks Tony will bear that in mind if it happens again but hopefully it won’t.

The Yorkshire Porsche Festival was great I would recommend it. Some great cars and friendly fellow Porsche enthusiasts.
