718 Cayman - squeaking brakes when not braking

Although I run a 987.2 CS I'm not aware of any general complaints about squealing bakes on any of the cars; certainly I've never experienced the problem on mine during road and track driving. The braking system maintains light contact between the pads and discs and I'd ask the Dealer to check disc run-out and that the damping pads between the brake pistons and pads are fitted correctly since they are designed to reduce brake squeal.

If the brakes squeal during application it could be that the pads have become glazed and my only suggestion is that you find somewhere safe to brake repeatedly really hard from high speed to see if there's an improvement. A track day would be an ideal opportunity..!

My 718 2.0 is low mileage....I bought it 9 months old with 1100 miles on it. In the last year I’ve done c 2800 miles on it so it has c 3900 miles on it now.
I had a recurring rattle from the nsf which was traced to the front strut after 3 visits and a number of videos to the OPC. Each time I have mentioned the brakes squeaking. Last time they say they checked them and they were ok, but I tend to a strong rotational squeaking noise which was evident today of speeds between 50-60 mph when lifting off the accelerator.

Now, I know they can squeak a bit and Porsche have published a video on their website, but is it reasonable to think that the condition detailed above is "normal”?

Appreciate any info, similar findings etc, as I’m going to take up with the OPC again.....

Or you may have a small stone wedged in the caliper somewhere resting on the disc. Quite common, in my experience especially on the inside of the rear. OPCs seem to be generally hopeless at finding these and they typically don't blow out even with an air blast. On my 981 there's a specially-designed place (!) where they collect but you have to take the wheel off and look to find them. Might be as simple as that.

The problem tends to happen following braking, not during braking. For instance, slowed down for a roundabout, accelerated up to 50-60 mph lifted off and squeal could then be heard - no braking effort, no acceleration. I have had this for all the time I have had the car and mentioned it every time it has been in for the dashboard rattle. I don't think it is glazing - originally thought it must have been that - couple of heavy brake sessions but still there......Have just emailed the OPC and will ask them to investigate....

 
I had an intermittent rotational squeal (sometimes a loud graunch) for months. Did it anytime, any speed (up to 50ish), irrespective of braking, accelerating, or steady speed. Must have done thousands of miles with it. I didn't confirm it was a stone until I found it (but suspected, because I've briefly had them before). It was lodged in the crevice at the back of the rear caliper; when I found it, it was about 2-3mm in size, with its face resting on the back of the disc. Pinged it out with a bit of wire. Noise gone. Defeated the OPC and a tyre dealer. Might be worth a look

 
Although I have a 987.2 the design of the brakes is much the same, and I'm with the post above.

Picked-up a stone in the front going along a recently gritted road in Wales, really loud and squeeks were road speed dependent. Disappeared after 50 mph or so.

Went over a set of painted 'rumble strips' across a road later and the squeal went as suddenly as it came, stone bounced out by the vibration.

Take the car to a good independent who see real used cars every day, and they will find the stone I'm sure.

 
Probably not helpful if it has been going on for so long, but hard brake application in reverse can often clear a stuck stone. Has worked a couple of times for me.
