Anyone? Thought is to meet at the 68 Café, A68, Toft Hill, DL14 0JF at 11:00 for coffee and a natter (outside if this weather continues!). We can either have brunch there or have a run to a lunch stop in Teesdale, depending on available time.

Can't make it John but will take the opportunity to congratulate you in taking the initiative of organising mid week run outs ( let's say costal)in the south of the region. Big Mike covering inland and Cumbria etc and myself covering northumberland. Hopefully we can entice members that havnt been out for a run to join us for a coffee etc.

Sorry John I can't find the the time to do this one, much as I've tried. Have a good day out, see you soon. Kevin

I can’t make this one either. How about meeting up another day? I would also really like to have another chat with you and anyone else interested about a plan of action to get some more dates and routes in the diary re more rides out this year Maybe I should produce a suggested events calendar say for the north , south and west of our region to show to Greg and Debbie and for them to bring this up at the next club night?

Hi Stephen. We do have an events calendar and anyone can add to it. (Let Deb and Greg know) The events on it require quite a lot of organisation and planning and are the backbone of the R3 season. People put a lot of effort into making them happen, and letting others know well in advance so they get them into their diaries. In this region that effort is rewarded by very good turnouts and lots of happy, grateful, members and guests.

These ‘coffee meets’ add another layer to the club‘s social activity. They are impromptu events like this. The weather looks good in a few days time and it would be good to have a drive out. Let’s post it up on the forum to see who else has the same idea. All you need is a location to meet, with a supply of good coffee and buns. You meet, have a natter and may go on to drive some interesting roads for a bit if folk are up for it. The thing is, they don’t require a great effort to plan or to join in.

Last week’s North York moors run was an extension of the same thing. We had a starting point and some local knowledge of the roads roundabout. I did have an outline route planned which fortunately only took about 10 minutes to do, as it was changed three times before the first stop😊

Let’s just encourage any members who want to get out in their cars and meet others with similar ideas, to simply use the forum. Post up where and when, and see who joins in. Check in regularly to see what is going on. Don’t worry if you can’t make it as there will be other opportunities. If not, post one up yourself.

Thanks John & Stephen, I was interested to read both of your views. I would be interested to find out from other members their views also regarding organised & impromptu events.

Both have their positives and negatives and is why as a Region we are keen to explore as many different options if and when possible.

It has taken me a few years to persuade members to be confident and comfortable enough to get these impromptu drives up and running. Now they are, I am keen to see them continue in the current format as they offer an alternative opportunity to some of our members who choose to get involved.

Sadly due to work commitments, a mid-week day drive doesn’t really fit for me but that’s the point, I recognise one size doesn’t fit all.

I fully understand that not every member wants, or indeed enjoys, a set in stone, policed or managed event. This is, after all, your club and should some members choose to get out and enjoy a no agenda, relaxed couple of hours with other like-minded friends and members when the mood suits them, I think that's a great idea.

It is also important that any member who chooses to start an impromptu thread really shouldn’t be pressured or feel the need to worry too much about pre-planning routes, numbers attending and all the other responsibilities that organising a planned run can often bring. Drives of this nature can also be easily changed, should the good old British weather intervene.

Now, on the other side of the coin, I also understand other members feel the necessity to be able to plan ahead and will always demand to know every detail beforehand, again rightly so.

If and when we plan an organised drive, the dates are advertised well in advance and it is normally discussed during a Club night. This obviously gives members a greater insight into the event and a better opportunity to fit it into their diary. Due to this, quite often drives and experiences of this nature do always tend to have a much greater take up, such as the Clear Away the Cobwebs or Whitby Fish & Chips drives.

Larger events of this nature require a great deal of planning and that is why we ask members to pre-register to give us, as organisers, a much better insight into numbers, (but despite this, there are always a few extras who still turn up on the day) especially as more and more members want to participate in these bigger Regional events. Obviously larger drives require a lot more dedicated managing. Routes need to be identified and checked, stopping places must be able to accommodate potential numbers, convoy etiquette and safe parking is always considered paramount, hence, drives of this nature simply don't and won't ever just happen over night.

I would like to clarify there is no right or wrong answer here and I am really would not like to deter members who would like to get more involved in organising either. Anyone interested in creating an impromptu run or a pre-planned event or drive are extremely welcome to do so.

All I ask is first please check it doesn’t clash with any other scheduled events before posting your details on the forum to avoid confusion. If in any doubt feel free to drop me a quick email or give me a call.

Great impromptu run out today.....strong coffee, sunshine, a run through the Durham dales and fish & chips to finish....what's not to like...

Sorry we lost you Dave but I heard you had a more important phone call to take....good luck with that.

I agree with John and Greg, the formal runs take a lot of planning and hard work (kudos to Greg & Deb) while these spur of the moment runs can be very flexible. As John said, I changed his last week at least twice before we got out of his house!....sorry...

Stephen...make sure you wear good body protection for next month's club meeting or "Debbie" will be after your unmentionables......with a hammer!

As for me I will abide by the rules and ensure that 'Deb' is appropriately addressed......I know my place...[:)]

Thanks to you both getting back to me with your views here which I’ve taken on board. Just wondering if it’s worth meeting up to explore this further and or bring this matter up with the members at the next monthly meeting? I would venture to suggest that there is a demand for more structured/planned rides out and that the members may want to pool their ideas as to suggesting journeys.

I,m quite happy to share the burden and get involved in helping to organise such events . i can be contacted on 07767 258544 should you want to get in touch by phone or text but if not then we can maybe discuss at the next monthly meeting

......and my apologies to Mrs H !!!

I think the impromptu nature of these events is great ... hoping I can make one eventually ... to my mind the focus is on the meeting place rather than the route :)

Massive thanks to the Big Mike and the 2 Johns (sounds like a 70's dance troop). Great to meet up just sorry I had to take the call. Tried to catch up but you older gents showed a young scamp like me you've still got the moves....

Glad you had fun. See you next time

Dave

Thanks for the detailed response Greg. I happily agree with your points.

The annual show, planned runs, Christmas party, WOTY, OPC workshop visits, club nights, etc. are all things that are part of the core strength of R3 and ones I try to attend. The impromptu get-togethers simply add an extra opportunity to meet, filling in the gaps as it were. As you say, there is plenty of room for all types of event and as long as we keep the forum as the default posting medium and read other’s posts, any potential problems will be avoided.

On a personal note, being lucky enough to often be free during the week, it is particularly nice to make use of some of that time. (The irony is that weekends and Sundays in particular are my most committed days at the moment)

Here’s to a great summer of Porsche activity!

Hi Stephen,

As has already been mentioned, this section of the forum is pretty active and a good place for arranging impromptu meets.

Another thought is is that Greg and Deb send the monthly email out a few days after each club nigh, if the run is on the forum before the club night then I don't see it being a problem with it linked it there too - for those that don’t use the forum as often.
