88 Turbo Gearbox - Would S2 box be a suitable replacement ?

The gearbox on my 1988 Turbo is getting progressively noisier with metallic pieces found during a recent oil change so am having thoughts on obtaining a replacement.
I am pretty certain that a re build would be prohibitively extortionate & probably not a viable cost effective option even if the parts were readily available
The box fitted has a 'UY' code & I believe that they were only fitted to 86 - 88 models, these occasionally come up for sale but I may not be able to wait that long .
Question is, would an S2 box be a suitable alternative replacement?
I know the purists would say fit an original UY code box but if there are none available could this be an option to at least keep the car on the road ?

I wouldn't, some of the ratio's are different and not just the final drive, any other turbo box should do though...

Echo what Pete says. Check out Clark's Garage for a definitive list of all 944 gearboxes, ratios and features. This will help you. They are many 016 variants. The UY you have is a standard turbo box with open diff and no external oil cooler. At the top end of the scale is the AOR box which shares many parts from the UY but benefits from hardened 1st and 2nd gears, plate LSD and external oil cooler. Very rare as they weren't made in big numbers and a lot suffered from broken oil coolers and running dry. I recently refurbed an AOR using various bits out a UY that were the same, crown and pinion for example. Anyway do some research on Clarks and keep an eye on ebay/breakers.

Hi. Guys, Thanks for your comments.

Found the Info on Clark's quite useful.

I will continue to keep an eye out for one to come up somewhere.
