Hi All,

the MSA (MotorsportUK) has changed the standards for race helmets so mine in now useless (to me), it's a Bell Full Face Racing Helmet size 62 with HANS posts.

Never been tested so it's like new.....................

Is this of value to somebody on the forum???

Gerry

Excusing my ignorance, what’s changed in the MSA Standards that’s rendered yours useless?
Also, can anyone advise the rules regarding full face versus open face? I‘m Only thinking for track day use.
I am thinking of buying the Arai GP3-Jet 3 open face helmet?
Appreciate any advice.

The "Blue Book" issued by the MSA/MotorsportUK every year states every regulation for Motorsport in the UK for that year. The requirements for compeditor safety are included:
https://www.motorsportuk.org/assets/156-195commonregulationsforcompetitorssafetyk-4.pdf

Page 177 gives the permitted helmet regulations and labelling.

It's just that this year some stadards were dropped and others were required. My & Tom's helmets are 10 years old and ceased to be approved. Scruiteneering would not pass the vehicle and compeditors equipment as race worthy if I turned up with the wrong standard helmet.
They are perfectly good for track days, but you cannot take part in a race with one.

Gerry

Info ....

Equipment Requirements
All drivers and passengers must wear a suitable, correctly fitting crash helmet (not off road style motorcycle helmets) and have their legs covered at all times whilst on circuit. In the case of open top/soft top vehicles, drivers must wear full face helmets and also have arms covered at all times. ... from https://www.msvtrackdays.com/car/terms-and-conditions/

Thanks for replies guys. Think I’ll get the Arai open face, when I’ve saved up £432!!!!

Nigel,

It's your choice of course, but you really don't need to spend that sort of money on a track day helmet. I've seen some attendees using motorcycle helmets they've probably picked up from Halfords for 50 quid, although I bought a decent quality open face Bell Mag 1 Helmet quite a few years ago for about £200.

Jeff

You’re right of course, I’ll have a good search around to see what’s available at less cost.
I have motorbike helmets, so could presumably use them? Just fancied an open face for better visibility. Think as you say Bell do a cheaper open face helmet than the Arai.

It might sound obvious but the actual fit is very important and different manufacturers make sightly different shapes. When I was kitting up for racing I wanted a Stilo but none of theirs fitted properly, I tried Arai, no luck there, turns out my head is the right shape for Bell, so that's what I went with. Of the cheaper brands it's worth taking a look at Hedtec - they meet the standards, good quality and reasonably priced, I'd have had one but for my odd shaped head!

Yup 'fraid so Roger.

It's a Bell Sport 4 full face because we bought them when we were Caterham racing, no windscreen..I think we will go open face now we're GT racing.

Gerry

Gerry - I need a helmet for the occasional track day, having accidentally left my last one at a track in France. How much are you asking for it?

And on the subject of track days, is there an annual 944 track day? I did one a few years ago in my old turbo, but have been away from the 944 scene so am a bit out of touch. I’d like to take my new S2 for spin (not literally!).

Grubbster,
Head shape is good point. I found the same when buying my bike helmets. Mine are Arai bike helmets which is why I was thinking of going for the Arai open face, thought it might fit if same shape generally as their bike helmets. We’ll see, I’ll have to find somewhere to try one on.
cheers.

I've used bike Arai helmets for many years, but they seem a lot noisier now than they used to be. I bought a carbon Bell recently and the visor and the lining are much better quality than my last Arai.

It's yours if you want it Ewan, just give me the carriage, where abouts are you? PM me.

Blimey you've done well out of that then GERRY if it was from the Caterham days! (15+ years ago ?)

I bought a Bell Sport lid for msa Kart racing in 2011 and I was amazed I can stillcurrently use this.

It's Snell Sa2010 and at one point they were changing the stamp every 5 years, but the regs say 2023
So I still have some time to go with this...

Each to their own, but I wouldn't wear an old lid with someone else's sweat soaked into the lining.

When I started racing (in the last century) you could get away with a Motorbike helmet and trainers, so I've had few different helmets. I raced Caterhams for over twenty years, and in the beginning rules were very slack:

The sweaty head is in a nomex balaclava, so it's not as bad as shared helmets at a track day!

As you're giving it away, no reflection on you fella. Have to admit I've never worn nomex, so not aware if it contains everything.
