Thanks for the reply, yes I will be taking out the extended warranty.
I will book my car in and see what the dealership has to say. 👍

Can anyone confirm if the gearboxin my 2016 718 is the same & could have the same problem as some stage down the line. Appreciate it won’t be subjected to the same levels of torque etc as in a GT4 but a bit of a worry as I’ve only 6 months left on my warranty...

It seems to be that the failures were caused by the gearbox manufacturer changing to a weld to secure third gear to the shaft, but then reverting to splined method. Given the 718 was introduced to production after the spline to weld back to spline changes you should be OK.

Just dropped mine off today , pick up some time tomorrow but I asked about warranty on the new gearbox and was told as its fitted in side of the original warranty period it's only covered up till that ends ,if it was purchased after that time by me or who ever then it would come with what ever warranty  porsche provide with fitted parts.Must remember to ask if the gearbox is new or recondition when I get it back.It would be covered by extended warranty ,thanks Porsche very generous of you.

I suppose the logic is that the owner paid for a 3 year warranty and the recall is being performed under that warranty. However that seems to be at odds with parts themselves requiring to be warranted for a minimum period under UK law.

I guess the comfort is in the splined shaft gearbox having no obvious history of failure so drive the car and enjoy it.

I had a similar experience years ago with an Audi 80 Quattro estate that the cats kept failing on, i was told by a legal friend of mine that if you make a financial contribution to the cost of the part, they have to give you new part warranty on the item. So in short i paid £1 towards the cost of the cats and got 2 year warranty on those new cats. Could be worth checking out!

The new part only being covered until the end of the original warranty period is standard motor industry practice although manufacturers sometimes extend the warranty on specific parts that have been an issue usually major units so it would have been good pr to do that in this case

Ha ha! Thought they had contracted the Porsche Motorsport team to do yours in such quick time!
I like PDK. Had it on my R and would have chosen it on the GT4 if they had made them....probably wouldn't have needed a gearbox change if they had!

😮 wait what's this , can't be right so I'm checking in with the service team tomorrow morning , I tried tonight but they were all busy with customers at 16.40 this afternoon got lovely walk round video from the Porsche tech superman who's doing mine telling me it's done plus couple of other little things I'd wanted them to look at as well and come on down and get it tomorrow at my convenience . I only dropped the sucker off at 9am !

Great news on yours!

Looking like Monday to pick mine up. Good job I booked it in this week rather than next otherwise I would have missed the RS trackday at Oulton if I had.

Thanks for the grill comments Vitesse. I think I just about got my head around that!

I quite agree on the point of airflow restriction being negligible, if at all, with grills fitted. It all depends upon Porsche's interpretation.

I am not optimistic about Porsche Chester being able to offer anything positive on the topic, but I have always taken the view that if you don't ask, you don't get. I had the same situation with my request for Michelin tyres on my new GTS. My car came with P-Zeros, and Porsche Chester went the extra mile and sourced a set of PS4S N0 tyres to swap them over. Whether or not I have the same success with my front grill request is a moot point. I'll post the result whenever I get it.

Brian

There used to be a place in US called Porsche mesh that does protective grill mesh.
I got some on the 987 at the front to protect the radiators and at the rear to tidy up a bit.
Its black and sublte, Porsche should have built it that way in my opinion.  So if you're looking Brian, does that mean the newer models 981, 718 etc don't come with any protective mesh?

Got mine back yesterday after the gearbox swap and was given basically the same answer regarding warranty for the new box. However, they said that their work was guaranteed for a year and that if the gearbox developed a problem they were sure that there would be goodwill from Porsche to deal with it. I have another year of extended warranty which covers it anyway.
