All,

I am planning on trying Hill climbing this season in my GT4 in CLass 2 standard.

I want to ask someone what the format/typical timetable of the weekend/day events (I know there is a lot of waiting aroudn) so I can work out whether I need to camp and roughly what the timings are so I can make arrangemnts with Mrs Snow and for the kids.

Could someone on the foum connect me or provide some input.

Snowy

A few off the people up here who are members of DDK TIPEC PCGB who are into this side of the sport (Scotland ) do the hill climbs Doune .Bo'ness .Forestburn.

A lot off hanging around pre practice etc .All stay overnight in Campervans /Mobile don't fancy the camping esp up we get snow in July [:D]

Are you a member of a Motorsport UK club ? ... if not search out a local club https://www.motorsportuk.org/Clubs/Find-Clubs

Events can take on various formats e.g. Saturday practice - Sunday competition; others are morning practice - afternoon competition ...some of these are stand alone one day events per weekend whilst others are double header weekends i.e. same on Saturday and Sunday.

Depends how far you wish to travel, I did not find it a family sport given the travel and nature (hanging around) of the formats. My family only attended local events and then did not stay all day ! I mostly trailered the (road class) car (not a Porsche) and stayed in B&B`s.

Snowy,

As a former hill-climb competitor myself in the road car class, with my Cayman R 6 speed manual, it would be great to see a GT4 compete on the hills.

Jeff has already mentioned contacting Steve Kevlin, PCGB Motorsport Manager. He will advise you on the PCGB involvement in hill-climbing.

Alternatively, join a motor club near your area which organises hill-climbs according to Motorsport Association regulations (MSA). There are strict rules on eligible tyres for road car classes, along with mandatory safety equipment. Your car will need a timing strut as described in the MSA regs, fitted to the front bumper where the number plate routing is located. Andrew-CS has given you some useful links in this regard in a previous post.

On general note, most but not all, hill-climbs are held over a weekend, Saturday and Sunday, with at least 2 practice runs and 2 official timed runs in each class per day. It's usually an early start with signing-on and scrutineering taking place from 08.00am onwards. The day usually finishes around 16.30-17.00. Camping facilities are usually provided at most hill-climbs. Portable loos are also usually available. When I used to trailer my hill-climb racing Imp, my late wife and I used to stay in nearby B&B accommodation.

In my long experience of hill-climbing events, there is a fair amount of hanging around. Delays caused by "offs" when the track is red flagged, often impact upon the programme timetable. Delays usually reduce the number of practice runs allowed, but you are guaranteed at least 2 practice runs.

I would guess your GT4 will probably be shod with Michelin Cup 2 tyres. These will do perfectly well for hills both for dry and damp/wet conditions. In my experience the tracks were usually well drained, so pools of standing water was rarely an issue.

Good luck Snowy with your hill-climbing plans. Keep us posted on your progress.

I'll leave you with a parting shot of my Cayman R in action on the Fintray Hill Climb in 2014.

Brian

Great photo - lovely car - thanks for sharing your advice. I am certainly looking forward to a bit of down time between runs !!!

Nothing to add except to say good luck and enjoy yourself. Will you make the first one at Loton Park on 20/21 April? If so, I'll try and get there to watch. It's a great day for spectators. And Loton Park is like attending a forest rally stage with the noise bouncing of the trees. [:)]

I have hill climbed for 28 years, and Loton is my clubs own track.

up until last year I organised and ran their hill climb school days.

It is a great sport.

Hanging around phrase will soon change to being involved through the day with friends across the whole paddock gets very involving!

All the venues are very different to drive and be at for the weekend.

Good luck, and I hope you love it!
