No doubt anyone on here with a Macan that has a rear view camera knows how next to useless it is in wet weather especially at night.
I took delivery of my new Macan almost 2 weeks ago, it replaced my Macan GTS which I had owned for almost 3 years and still a great drive but, with a change to the way it was being used, hopelessly inefficient for the shorter (10 to 30 miles) drives that were making up most of the journeys. So I took the plunge and got a really good P/X against a brand new 2019 Macan which I have now had for two weeks and 550 miles driven. It's still running in so I have not taken it over 4000 RPM but the performance is fine with a decent amount of torque available low down in the rev range, obviously it has not got the urgency of the GTS when it comes to full on acceleration as it lacks the extra 115HP and 120Nm of torque but it compensates by being 100kg lighter.
Like my old GTS this new Macan has Air Suspension but Porsche have improved this so it's not so "floaty" and in my opinion the car's lighter weight makes it nicer to drive. I thought about holding off until a delivery in April of a Macan S which was about £3K extra OTR cost for an identical configuration but I would have incurred further depreciation on my GTS so the cost delta was more like £5.5K and the short journey inefficiency was not going to change as it's still a 3 Litre V6. Overall, I have not missed the performance of the GTS, this new Macan drives really well with plenty of "go" for normal day to day driving and if I want to drive a car with more performance then I can take my 991.2 C4 GTS out.
Anyway onto the subject of this post.
Like my previous GTS, my new Macan has Surround View, however Porsche have made a significant improvement with the new model, first of all the new Rear Light Bar in the tailgate has affected the air flow so that the rear window and camera lens do not get as filthy as the old model. To help keep the camera lens clean, Porsche have added a small washer jet that sprays water over the lens when the rear wash/wipe is used. Furthermore with Surround View active the door mirror courtesy lights are switched on at night making it easier to see when parking near a kerb. Whilst not perfect, the rear camera stays cleaner, it is a noticeable improvement and more useable at night even in the rain and there has been plenty of that in the last few days to test it.
