Fluctuating oil consumption 997.1

I purchased my 2007 997.1 4S from Cameron Porsche 18 months ago with 49,000 on the clock. It’s been brilliant with no problems whatsoever. I used about 3.5 litres of oil in the first 6,000 miles which is well within tolerances. However, according to the gauge, I appear to have used no oil whatsoever in the last 1,000 miles. Measurement has taken place on the same flat drive and the gauge has remained constant on three bars. Anybody have an explanation?

Roy,

Based upon previous consumption I presume you were expecting to have to add about 0.5 litres of oil?

Oil consumption will be very much dependent upon the type of driving you're doing - and varies considerably from car to car - so I'd just keep an eye on the level over the coming month or so. Unfortunately with no dipstick available you're dependent upon the electronic gauge which may have developed a fault and the best way to check it out is to run some Porsche-specific diagnostics. Maybe Cameron Porsche can advise you?

Thanks Jeff, yes it makes sense. I assume that should the gauge have developed a fault the oil warning light will come on at some point before any serious damage takes place!
Cheers

That's the trouble with all this electronic jiggery-pokery Roy. You should get a low oil level warning light but I assume that's linked to the gauge sensor and unfortunately by the time the oil pressure warning light comes on the damage may have been done..!

Hope you get it sorted to your satisfaction.

Hi, my 2005 c2s did the same a few years back, and i too started to doubt the sensors. The consumption returned to normal after a regular service which involved an oil change, so, no idea why other than I was happy to see the consumption resume.

Regards

I’ve had my 2008 4S manual for about 4 months now and was initially staggered to discover how oil requirement is displayed. I have done 1500 miles in that time and at first thought I had a problem but it looks like the car possibly came out of the dealership with low levels (!).

I am am still trying to get my head around the oil level gauge. Sometimes it says it needs oil and on other occasions when it would appear to me that it WOULD need oil it says it’s ok.

Needless to say I watch it like a hawk....
