Dear all,
My car has gone into Porsche for a service and they have loaned me a new Boxster S.
I have to say the boxster has really impressed me, I wasn't much of a fan before.
I thought that it would be sluggish compared to the 911 but I was wrong.
Despite only being a 2.5 litre it is quick off the mark and holds the road really well. The Sports Chrono package is well worth the additional cost, almost giving you two different cars to drive in one. The interior is excellent quality and really comfortable.
It's a different driving experience, being a mid engine car, but a real joy and sounds great too.
If you get he chance to drive one, take it.
I'm actually hoping that they forget that I have it and keep my 996 instead!!
I'll put my hands over my ears now so I can't hear the screaming from fellow 996 owners!!

A new Boxster will run circles around a 996. In fact even a contemporaneous Boxster S would have been a good match in terms of agility, steering feel, precision and braking ability. They are much more go-kart like.

Wonderful cars, I really miss mine!

Same happened to me a while back and I ended up having it for five days, brilliant car!!!! But I was glad to get back in the 996!

...running rings around a 996 depends on whose driving it ;-) From the same era 986 Boxster is also a fabulous drive - light and well balanced at great value.

Yep my 981S is streets ahead of the 996 I had 15 years ago
handling power it’s all excellent
still love the quirks of the 911 though so after 2 box and a cayman going to a 991 soon having had every 911 since 1990

I enjoyed a 986.2 Boxster S from 2008 to 2014, and have enjoyed my 996.2 Carrera 4 Cabriolet since trading in the Boxster for the 911 in January 2014. Both cars are wonderful examples of Porsche sports cars. I have loved driving them both. The Boxster is more affordable, but the 911 (any version from 1963) is more Porsche. Anyone who owns either should be a happy bunny. But my 996 with sports exhaust sounds better.

Like anything, it's all subjective, and as we progress in terms of gadgets, safety, knowledge and technology, things get better. Anyone watching Modern Wheels Vs Classic Steals on Dave, really makes me pine for a classic (of any variety) for looks, styling, nostalgia and in some cases raw car, but, then looking at what you can get for modern at same price, its faster, safer, more comforts etc, but that is always the way. Hell, my mrs new GTD smacks her old (but only 18 months old) A Class out of the park, but it is a Merc, lol (don't get me started on it)

When I was asked after testing the 996, was there anything that was stopping buying the car, or any doubts, there was one. A black, Boxster S, that looked sublime and was fairly loaded, and for the same price (just over the 996) in the showroom. But it wasn't a 911. I wanted a 911 since I could walk and that is why we buy/own/love what we like. I could have bought a lot more BHP and car for my money with another marque, even 'more Porsche' you could say, but it would never have been a 911 convertible :)

All Porsches IMO are lovely cars, some I want to own/drive more than others. I need to sample more models before I make or want a change, but I have nowhere near get the full use or driving experience out of this yet, before I move on (if I ever do).

Excellent appraisal - well done!

I owned a mint 53 reg 996 C4 for 10 yrs. it was built by Porsche for their motor show stands so was a really fully loaded car.
18 months ago at 53k miles decided to fettle the car up back to like new again so sent into body shop for all paint defects sorting at a cost of £1800. It came out immaculate.
Next stop my independant to sort out anything that needed doing mechanically. What a shock- a list a mile long- it needed about £6-7k spending on it to get it sorted. I was gutted but I decided that I had enjoyed the car for ten years and it was time to sell before mot time two months later.
Thought that I would get about £15 k for it but actually got £20k and didn't need to spend the £6-7k on repairs.
Purchased a 2010 987 gen 2 Boxster S manual with sports exhaust, service, new tyres, new front discs and pads and 21 k miles on the clock. In my opinion it would leave the 996 for dead, open top motoring when required, twice as much boot space, glorious engine note with sports exhaust and about half the price of a similar age 911.
Dont believe this poor mans Porsche, hairdresser business!!
