944 S2 Fuel Level

Hello All,

Im having an issue with my S2 the fuel gauge only works when above half. Is this a common issue? Fuel level sender shot?

Any help appreciated!
 
It is common for the fuel gauge to read 3/4 full when full, but this can be remedied by cleaning the rugby ball contacts on the back of the clock pod. Other useful fuel stat is that I once went 50 miles with the light on without breaking down, I think the reserve is 8 litres once the light activates. Can't help other issue although cleaning the rugby balls wouldn't do any harm!

Also a worn sender is sensitive to cornering, and more evident the more fuel you have. So with 3/4 tank it can drop 1/8 going left and rise 1/8 sweeping a long right hander, or it may be the other way about!

Does it read empty until you half fill it then it springs up to half?

Ive never let it go below - worried I will break down, so when it hits half i put about £30 where it goes to 3/4ish (maybe a bit more)
 
Sounds like you need to clean up the rugby ball connectors feeding the gauge. There are 4 but TBH be a good idea to clean them all up, that should make your gauge read full when it is full. Did for me anyway.

Still not sure what you mean about gauge only works when above half? What happens below half?

OK. Definitely get the rugby ball connectors cleaned up and take it from there. It's quite easy to remove the clock pod. You need to remove the oval surround with the centre dash vents on it. One screw left of vents, 2 screws to right of vents. 3 screws above clocks and 2 screws below clocks, often those ones missing. Then its just 4 screws holding the clock pods in. Once pod loose bring forward a bit and unclip 2 x multi-plug from the back. There are levers on them, very easy. When re-assembling make sure the trip reset switch hasn't fell off!

I think it is 7mm nuts, 2 on each, for the rugby balls. Once off clean up the prongs with some VERY fine emery paper to remove oxidation.

Just an update for all- Ive now done this and I believe the issue to still be there, I will take for a drive and see what happens!
 
if your gauge never drops below half way, is this with the key out?

if not then i would get a green can, fill it with a gallon, and just drive till it drops below half or the light comes on, it might be that because you never let it drop the wire the float goes up and down on might be covered in crap and not allowing the float to drop.

you have to test it either buy driving it till it runs out of fuel, or taking the float sender out of the tank
 
the float may well be stuck, you can get the sender out of the tank, take out the boot carpet, if its still there remove the fireproof mat, then the plastic cover and there is your sender,

you will need a large pair of swan necks to get the nut undone and a new seal when you put it back,
