Rear calipers - cleaning, replacement, upgrade?

Hi all

I've had assorted problems with my rear calipers over the past couple of years, requiring regular cleaning up. Just got back from the garage yesterday after the latest clean and one is still binding slightly - a pain. It seems that cleaning them up is not a long term solution, so I might replace them. While doing so, I was wondering if I can upgrade to calipers that bind up less. Are the S2 (4 pot?) calipers better than the Lux (2 pot) calipers for instance? Or is there a good source of new replacement calipers? I got a quote from Porsche and it was the thick end of £900 for the two rear calipers, discs, pads etc. Which stings a bit!

Thanks.

you cant really go 4 pot on the back and not 4 pot on the front too,

there are a few sets of 4 pot rears on the bay of fleas for reasonable money, but they will need refurbing before use too,

what sort of rears do you have now, single piston sliding type?

As Martin said, you can't upgrade the back without doing the front, if you do you'll probably find the handling worse than even the oldest 911...lots of visits backward into hedges would be the order of the day..:)

Fair enough! Ideally not looking to replace the fronts too as they work fine. Also preferring not to slide backwards into hedges!

Yes, I think I do have single pot rears come to think of it. (Whatever was standard). And yes, they do slide, or they used to - hence the problems!

Maybe I'll pull it apart again myself and see what I can find. But I don't have a brake bleeder or anything overly technical so don't want to go too far...

On the single cylinder ATE brakes fitted to early 944's & 924S's,the angle of the cut out in the piston is critical to efficient operation of the caliper.

Any uneven wear of the pads seems to cause the piston to ultimately stick,on braking leading to binding. It also allows rust & detritus to gather /form on the piston end which doesn't help the piston to retract.
I made a thick cardboard template to set the piston cut out angle when I work on the back brakes.

Type911 don't have any more 944 calipers, and aren't likely to again. They've taken them off the website. Can't find new or even refurbed on Eurocarparts, GSF etc. There are a few on ebay but they look pretty grim. Can anyone recommend another supplier? Or even a good refurb company? Though I'd prefer a straight swap...

Cheers.

Not sure but at that price from a reputable stockist with a guarantee its a no brainer!

Just noticed its over £1k for one of my front calipers!!

I did ask them, but I've not heard back. Suppose you're right, for the cost it doesn't matter too much.
