944 S2 Brakes

Hi,
I am having too renew my disks and pads due to the fronts being warped, so decided to do front and rears.
Done the drivers front, no problems. Moved on to the drivers rear and cannot get the inner break pad to fit, it just wont go in!!
Also, when I ordered the kit, the back pads are different from the front, but when I pulled the original pads out of the rear, they are the same as the fronts, should this be the case?
 
I think that the brake pads are the same front and rear on the S2, but the calipers have different sized pistons in them. Don't quote me though as I'm not 100% sure.

The classic reason why pads won't fit in the calipers is that there is plate lift, but if that's a photo of the offending caliper then it looks OK. However you do have a badly dislodged dust seal on one of the pistons in there which will need to be set straight before you put the pad in, and that could be stopping the pad from going in.

Can you get the old pad back in? The answer to that will help you.

looking at the dust cover, do you think a rebuild would be necessary?

so hoping for a good Father’s Day drive out but not looking hopeful ??
 
Probably because you have what is known as plate lift mate. The plates ate the top and bottom of the orifice for the pads and the calipers are made of different metals and thus corrosion builds up under the plates Pushing them up. You could just grind down the pads but if it has gotten that far then a refurb is probably not a bad idea.
 
You probably could do with a refurb to eradicate any plate lift and address those dust seals. However I would remove the caliper and install the brake pads away from the disc and then you may may just be able to relocate the caliper by persuading the full assembly onto the disc before bolting up. If this is not possible you most likely have plate lift and/or knackered dust seals.

To confirm your pads are same front and back on an S2.

Definitely plate lift. You can see the white powdery corrosion between the stainless steel wear plate and the alloy caliper forcing the wear plate away from the caliper. It is solvable but much easier to do on the bench than in situ so remove the caliper, get the wear plates off and clean everything up. You might need to straighten the wear plates before refitting them. Separate the two metals with a layer of silicon sealant. Replace all the dust covers while you are in there.

i had to be taken into hospital for an operation this morning - nothing life threatening but means I cannot continue with the brakes at the moment.

now the problem is I still have the car in the air on the rear jack point. Do you think it’s advisable to get someone to pop the wheel back on temporary and on the ground as its a cab?

or if anyone is interested in helping getting the calipers off for me ??

Cool, I’m in wellingborough.

now I am feeling a bit better I might get chance this week to get the calipers off and sent for rebuild, just out the new disks on

A word of advice - accept Waylander's offer of help, he'll save you a world of grief (as he did for me with replacing the fuel lines on my 968 cab).
 
No, I replaced with Porsche parts purchased from East London Porsche. A couple of the flexis for MY91-92 968's are NLA, so we had to change the fuel filter clamp, flexis either side and both fuel lines from the rear of the car to the engine bay with MY93> parts. If done by the WSM method (drop the rear axle) it's 8-10 hours labour, Martin did the job in 4 1/2 on my driveway, knew the routine as he'd had to do the same to his own 968.
 
I'm loving the sound of all these offers of help. Who's up for as porsche fixing party in Farnham? I can supply beer and board [:D] My list of jobs never gets smaller, and I don't even have a garage I can work in [&o]. I was trying to bleed my brakes last weekend and couldn't get the bleed nipples loose on 3 of the 4 calipers....probably looking at a full re-build all round I recon...
