Porsche replacement/exchange engine unit - what's on offer?

My indie has mentioned that it's possible to get a replacement engine on exchange from Porsche for "about £4k". I've asked him to find out for me what is delivered and I guess that someone here will know the answers but:

refurbished block of indeterminate age?
what's refurbished?
to what spec & standard?

I could assume that the latest Porsche solution to the IMS bearing is included but what about the liners - hopefully they'd all be renewed?

Will there be any kind of warranty with it?

I can't comment from experience, but much as I wish it was true, I'd suggest your Indy is living in cloud cuckoo land...

Hi Chris,

If we're talking about the cost of the exchange short engine, all remains unconfirmed but he's talking about the cost of the unit as delivered, not, all ancillaries fitted and back in the engine bay.

Still sounds remarkably cheap to me, I doubt you'd get a short VW engine at that price, let alone a Porsche lump, but there's a sure way to find out...
I have recently heard figures of £12,000 mentioned on this forum

Please don't take this personally but I fear we're drifting into the territory known as "'Net knowledge" which to my mind is a silly place where every single written remark takes on a legitimacy of it's own, you know "I read at the PCGB forum that...."

Hopefully someone with the kind of knowledge I was hoping to learn from will drift by quite soon but in the meantime we can continue to shoot the breeze.[:)][:)]

Net knowledge is useful where you know is it is from legitimate sources. I rebuilt my engine using advice from this forum, uk / us specialists and talking to Porsche engineers.

I would suggest calling an OPC to get a quote and then take a deep breath.

A short block for a 3.4 is currently £4482 +VAT. A 3.6 is £4741 +VAT. Assuming you don't do anything with the heads, ancillaries, and clutch, etc., you'll also need about £150's worth of gaskets, plus the labour. As far as I can tell, it is an outright purchase, not exchange. It would appear to be a 'subsidised' price, as they were originally £12k.

An exchange engine for a 3.4 is £12140 +VAT. I can't find a current price for the 3.6. They come complete with everything except the aircon pump. The ones I have seen look brand new to me, and have even been pre-filled with Mobil 1. The latest exchange engines (and short blocks) are built with the 997-type large single-row intermediate shaft bearing. I don't believe they have done anything different with the liners. Because the liners are cast in to the block, I don't see how they could refurbish them (unlike Hartech who machine new liners) which is why I think they are basically new units. If you have to replace the block, crankshaft and intermediate shaft, the only major components left are the pistons and con rods, and the pistons are likely to be re-usable. It is probably more cost effective to build new 'exchange' engines on a production line, than to hand rebuild used ones.

Richard,

Thank you for that thorough reply (the one I was hoping for actually). It's a pity no exchange "long" engine price was available for the 3.6 but I'll add a notional 10% just for the sake of adding some kind of man-maths uplift.

It gives me a clear idea as to what at least two of my options are, short and long-engine. I've got a ballpark Hartech figure, I have completely discounted the "Renegade" V8 conversion which just leaves my indie to do some research on local independent engine rebuilders...

Another step nearer the truth....
