Dear all,
It seems that many 964RS owners have had their cars modified in one way or another.
For the benefit of all I thought that it might be interesting to share our knowledge on
worthwhile modifications.
I use my RS mostly for track days, rarely on the road. I have had two 964Rs so far.
1. A 3.6RS (with a different chip, ~285bhp), to which I later had the hot-film fitted
(~297bhp).
2. A heavily modified RS, which has all the mods listed below:
3.8 engine upgrade
6-speed gearbox
bigger brakes
H&R dual-spring shocks
chassis set-up
The conjunction of the 3.8 engine and 6-speed gearbox basically provides 5 usable
gears (with more torque) on a typical track, when only 4 (longish, particularly 2d)
are available with the standard 964RS box. I know of RS owners who have changed the
king and pinion of their standard gearbox to shorten the ratios. This is a cheaper option
to be able to use all 5 gears. The enhanced power and torque of the 3.8 become
most noticeable after 100 mph...
The bigger brakes (from the 993 cup) allow to brake a bit later. Useful at the end
of these long straights...
The H&R dual spring shocks transform the behavior of the car on regular roads
(one of the spings accommodate fast bumps), in addition to be fully adjustable
for the track, allowing more pointy setups with slicks.
Any opinion out there on the worthiness of the Motec system? I have read wonders
about it, but my hot-film 3.6RS (dynoed @ 297bhp) was keeping up on long straights
with a Motec 3.6RS (dynoed @ 330bhp, but not the same dynos unfortunately
.
The more pointy question is this: Is there a significant difference between a
remapped 964RS ECU (i.e. with an improved chip), and the Motec mapping; I mean
a performance difference that justifies the 3-4,000 pounds of the latter, compared
with a fraction of the cost for an improved chip?
Bear in mind all of this is arises from a naive mind (not a mechanical/setup expert).
I am Looking forward to hear about your mods and opinions...
